I remember that story you mention from out west.
There was an administrator at a small college in Oklahoma City that went
missing on trip east (to Memphis?).
Finally they found him (in his car) in a river. It appears that he just
was unfortunate enough to exit the roadway before a bridge and the
car ended up in the river without leaving much of a discernible trail.
This was probably about 20 years ago.
There was a case in Southern California that you might be thinking of: Missing screenwriter's vehicle found in Mojave Desert canal
That Arizona accident you referenced was investigated and determined that the driver got on the interstate headed in the wrong direction and left the road where there would have been a guardrail had he been traveling in the proper lanes.
There was an old lady whose car went over a guardrail in Florida and she was stuck there for several days before being found. Emergency personnel went looking for her but didn't find her. Kind of odd. Were there any skid marks in this one? Not a very thorough search. I'm sad for the couple. Prayers, to their friends and relatives.
It was southern California, actually, in Palmdale. He'd run off the Antelope Valley Freeway into the California Aqueduct.
