Story from our local paper's website:
Myrtle Beach couple's bodies found in crashed car

Road workers found a crashed car off Interstate 95 on Monday that contained the bodies of a Myrtle Beach couple traveling to New York City to visit family.
Authorities identified the two bodies inside the car as Wayne Guay, 57, and Dianne Guay, 55, who had been missing since Thursday.
N.C. Department of Transportation workers followed skid marks near the Red Oak exit on northbound I-95 near mile marker 140, then spotted the Guay's white Mazda 3 submerged in a small creek, said 1st Sgt. Keith Stone of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
The car left the road, veered down the bank and ricocheted off a tree before hitting the creek and sinking to the bottom of the 6- to 8-foot deep unnamed body of water. The license plate of the car was barely visible, he said.
"It just happened to go right into the mouth of the creek," Stone said, adding that the time of the crash has not been determined because the cold water helped preserve the bodies. "(But) I wouldn't have any reason to believe it's inconsistent with when they left."
Rocky Mount is about 225 miles from Myrtle Beach or roughly a 3 1/2-hour drive. Stone said speeding does not seem to have been a factor and that it appeared the brakes were tapped slightly before the car left the road.
Wayne Guay appears to have been driving, Stone said, and neither Wayne nor Dianne were wearing a seat belt when the car was removed from the water. The impact with the tree penetrated the driver's side of the car and left a hole about 10 inches in diameter, Stone said.
The Stony Creek Rescue Squad sent a diver into the water to do a preliminary investigation of the scene after the car was found at about 3:30 p.m. The murky water prevented the investigator from determining anything except the doors were closed and all the windows except the front driver's side one were intact, said Rescue Squad Chief Phil Rowe.
Family members of the Guays had been searching for them since Thursday, when calls to the couple's cell phones began to go straight to voice mail. The couple were expected in New York City late Thursday evening.
Authorities all along the East Coast had been notified to be on the lookout for the couple, and the family rented a helicopter for an hour and a half Sunday and five hours Monday to help the search.
Initially authorities suggested that the Guays could have intentionally disappeared for a few days, but family members said that was almost inconceivable.
Stone said he was surprised that the car was not found sooner.
"It's ironic that someone didn't see it," Stone said. "There's never really a minute that a car isn't coming by."
Information from the Associated Press is included in this report.

I-95 is the most traveled road in America, which means they drove off the road, somebody MUST have seen it happen and did nothing. Sad commentary on American soceity

On all counts there may be valid reasons. Yet, the people who were concerned knew where this husband and wife were supposed to be. The South Carolina PD and SP were not doing their job. Although from all appearances these people died fairly quickly and nothing could have been done for them except recovery.
You mention the wait of 24 hours. Well, this was more than 72 hours that these people were missing.
Some mentioned driving hazards like falling asleep. I wasn't born in a bubble, I have driven cross country several times. I know the dangers on being behind the wheel to long. Also along the way there was mention that the husband had diabetes. If he was taking his meds that wouldn't interfere with his driving.
Either something happened to the vehicle, or smudging or someone caused the vehicle to veer off the road into the swamp.
Sure all those devices mentioned are good. But they're only good if your conscious to use them. No one was there to know what actually happened.
However, I still state that the State Police in both states should have been more proactive in this as they should be in all types of problems of this sort. I am not against police, more pro police. But there is never a cop around when you need one. We all know that.

"neither Wayne nor Dianne were wearing a seat belt when the car was removed from the water"
Oh yes, I'm SURE if they had been wearing precious seat belts, they would've been saved from the murky waters.

There is a report of a 911 call at 7:30am last Thursday of a collision at the location where the car was found. Highway Patrol said they went to the location and could not find any debris or collision.
Strange how Stone thinks it is odd that no one saw it sooner - that must be implying there is a fair amount of evidence that was a crash.
I wonder how detailed of a search they did when they first responded. Also says they weren't wearing their seatbelts - we will have to see - they may have taken them off while trying to get out.
It says it appears that they tapped their breaks before leaving the road - I wonder how they know that - "skid mark on pavement". It would indicate a defensive move to avoid something or that they cancelled cruise control.
Such a tragedy for this family at this time of year.

There was an old lady whose car went over a guardrail in Florida and she was stuck there for several days before being found. Emergency personnel went looking for her but didn't find her. Kind of odd. Were there any skid marks in this one? Not a very thorough search. I'm sad for the couple. Prayers, to their friends and relatives.

I checked Mapquest and Rocky Mount is 3-hours, 55-minutes from Myrtle Beach. So the sun would have been up around 7:30 or so and they left their home around 4.

Oh yes, I'm SURE if they had been wearing precious seat belts, they would've been saved from the murky waters. I saw a report once that said seat belts absolutely improve your odds in that situation:
(a) You are much more likely to remain conscious
(b) You are much less likely to become disoriented -- helpful if you need to smash your way out, but especially helpful because you don't waste time figuring out where the door handle is and which way is up.

There was another one like this way out in Ariz or New Mexico. It was southern California, actually, in Palmdale. He'd run off the Antelope Valley Freeway into the California Aqueduct.
To: libravoter
I can see that.
Of course, if 1 can jump ship beforehand, so much the better. Never mind if you're strapped in an panicking, that can be a bad thing. Especially these modern belts with the difficult buttons. I'll take the easy button on the fat face of my old Lincoln anyday over the things recessed in the end faces.
I wonder how they come up with those odds. I still say it's all a conspiracy to limit your freedom. They never fail to mention about seat belts and they always buttress it as the end-all be-all.

Time to ping Jaque so she can tell us how stupid this couple is and how this is all their fault. You might want to call Dawn, too.

>The man was diabetic. Supposedly they were to leave the house at 4a.m.<
Or, it's very possible a deer ran out in front of them. I wish someone would design a motion sensitive device that would scare the blasted things when they get near a roadside.
