I've recently begun purchasing bulk .22 ammo and thought that Freeper input would once again be helpful in getting the most bang for my buck.
What do you recommend for .22 caliber ammunition?
What various grain do they come in? What brand of .22 is the most deadly?

There is 22 Hornet, which is pretty far from 22 LR, and there are other high velocity 22 or even 17 that others prefer for varmint hunting. Elephant is not usually considered varmint.

Actually I heard from an Alaskan guide that the most effective handgun for grizzly defense is a .22 LR. Upon seeing the grizzly charging you draw the pistol and shoot the nearest customer in the knee then run like hell.
I've had good luck with most bulk, name brand .22 lr. Get copper jacketed if it's worth the price to you. Get the hyper sonic or the fastest that you cn get. Match ammo will be more accurate but it's up to your budget.

Self defense
.22 WMR ammunition is not specifically manufactured for self-defense, so you will not find self defense loads in any of the manufacturers' brands listed below. This is because while there are some "deep concealment" handguns (notably the mini-revolvers from North American Arms) that are chambered for the .22 WMR cartridge, no rimfire cartridge is ordinarily recommended for self-defense. The gun makers are giving the customers what they want, while the ammo makers are constrained by the physical reality that no .22 WMR cartridge is a "man stopper."
While no .22 WMR load is really adequate for self-defense, any gun is better than no gun at all. So, if a .22 WMR rifle or pistol is all that is available, it makes sense to at least use the best ammunition available for the purpose. According to the statistics that I have seen, that is the 40 grain jacketed hollow point bullet. The top example is the Winchester Super-X load,

After running out of ammo I instructed my faithfull guide Haji to distract the beast. The enraged beast was pounding Haji against the nearest tree and I chose that moment to leap upon his heaving back. I then held the gun over my head and with a mighty heave, I drove the barrel of the weapon into the elephants heart killing him dead.

.22 LR is great for protecting your family from squirrels and other small rodents.

Paint me a bigoted Neanderthal, but I would prefer my ammo, if it has to be imported, made in Central or Northern Europe.

I bet if I put one in your head (academically speaking) at 100 yrds you would be thinking different?
Plus, more people own a .22LR then any other caliber. .22 can be bought in bulk and, in a shtf scenario, traded 1 at a time or by handful to the hungry soul.

.22's a great - I own a bunch of them, and I have so much .22LR that I keep finding it all over the place. LOL. Literally, thousands and thousands of rounds, in the house, the studio, the car, ... seems like I never can find it when I need it.
But - that 100-yrd shot would likely bounce off the victims head, you know.

CCI is the best, Remington the worst. Aguila ( made in Mexico) are the fastest with their 30 grain HP. They likely would be the most powerful, but they are uncoated and tend to lead the barrel more.
A buddy of mine bought a box of everything that is locally available and tested them all on a chronograph. The CCI varied just a few FPS from shot to shot and were as fast or faster than most popular brands.
The Remingtons were total garbage and varied up to 200FPS from shot to shot.
The others fell somewhere in between.
Don't buy the cheapo bulk in milk cartons. They are always bottom of the line.
I prefer CCI mini mag HP for squirrels but would likely use the Aguila for raccoon.

I beseech you. Beware your faithful guide "Haji".
He may have been schooled in an extremist madrassa, or barring that any publicly funded school in the UK and be an Al Queada sleeper agent. (Not as funny as I intended :~( )

I agree that the lead fouling would be an issue.
