As Mojave Airport moves into the future as the nation's first inland space port, the facility needs to create a brand that will make it readily identifiable and distinct from others that may follow.
With that goal in mind, directors of the East Kern Airport District - which governs the air and space port - narrowly approved a concept for the logo design that is intended to convey the purpose of the facility.
Using such signature brand symbols as the Swiss Army cross and Nike "swoosh" as examples, Witt told directors the air and space port needs a logo that instantly will register the values of the site with consumers.
"We need to get out there in the public eye with a visual identity. When you see that logo, you recognize Mojave Airport," he said.
The concept approved by the board is the word "Mojave" in capital letters, with a vertical split in the "O." In place of the "A" is an upward-pointing arrow.
Beneath will be the words "Air and Space Port."
A finalized version of the logo will be reviewed by the board in January, Witt said.
Eventually, the logo will be part of a comprehensive campaign to establish the airport's brand identity with the public. This will include stationary, business cards, media materials, advertising and identifying markings on airport vehicles and other property.
As the only space port in the state for manned spaceflights, Mojave is positioned to take a leading role in that industry. Although it only has functioned as a space port for 92 minutes total in the two years since becoming licensed, the site increasingly has seen space-related businesses arrive. Approximately 270 space-industry jobs have been created at the site during that time, Witt said.
