CATS can suffer from a feline form of Alzheimer's disease, Edinburgh scientists revealed today.
A study into ageing cats identified a key protein which can build up in the nerve cells in their brains and cause mental deterioration, similar to that in humans.
The research was carried out by scientists at the University of Edinburgh, as well as universities at St Andrews, Bristol and California.
Dr Danielle Gunn-Moore, of Edinburgh University, said: "We've known for a long time that cats develop dementia, but this study tells us that the cat's neural system is being compromised."
Some pets make far better companions than some people.
They forgot what again?
I just think we have our priorities backwards. I'm not anti-animal, I'm just pro-people. Humans should come first, sort of the opposite of PETA and ELF.
CATS had alzheimer's? That would explain his bizarre use of the English language. "All your base..."
I don't recall...
*ouch*
"I'm sure that won't be a popular opinion"
Truth is not a popularity contest.
If there are children in the world not receiving medical care, how can one justify spending huge sums on animals?
I think my cat has it. He keeps licking himself like he is candy.
"Sooooo.....how long have you been telling other people how to spend their money?
Which is to say, how long have you been voting Democrat?"
Haha! I've been working for Republicans since I handed out leaflets for President Nixon in 1972. I didn't tell anyone how to spend their money, I just stated that we have our priorities bass-ackward. Please share with us which you feel is more important: a human baby or a kitten?
Is this DU?
As long as the money I spend on my pets, or ANYTHING legal for that matter, doesn't come out of your pocket, then it's none of your business, and certainly not "evil."
As long as children are starving, let's none of us buy anything frivolous - no books, no Christmas decorations or gifts, not even computers and Internet access. /sarcasm
There is no shortage of the machines or diagnostic equipment, in fact the increase in demand for animal testing probably lowers the cost of manufacturing. As long as the individual pet owner is the one shelling out the money for the procedures I don't see how any of it takes away from resources available to humans.
People often make the mistake of thinking that if resources or people are dedicated to something, nothing else gets done. This is a fallacy. The same Secret Service that tracks down counterfeiters protect the PResident and members of COngress. Police are tasked with duties from street patrol to counter-terrorism. Division of labor and specialization dictates that we will have human and animal doctors, and the technologies that comes with it.
I would save my cat before I would save 90% of the people I know.
They say woem, woem, woem, not meow, meow, meow.
The nice thing about living in a free country is not having to justify what we do with our own property.
I even agree with you I think some people spend way too much money on their pets, but that is their business, if they have the money to spend and they are not neglecting their own kids it is none of my or anybody elses business.
Now with all of the money being taken out of Americans pockets to provide health-care to needy children through Medicaid and other welfare programs I am not about to tell anyone that they should not be spending their own money on anything that their heart fancies to provide health-care to the children of others.
