George Mitchell will never be nominated for U.N. ambassador under this administration.
Mitchell was under serious consideration for commissioner of Major League Baseball back in 1992, and would have been approved by a wide margin in a vote of the team owners at the time if he had been nominated. However, he first had to receive unanimous support from a five-man selection committee among the owners, and he only got four of the five votes he would have needed for his nomination to be passed on to a vote among the entire league.
Mitchell was apparently such a royal pain in the @ss to President George H.W. Bush that the owner of the Texas Rangers back then -- a fella by the name of George W. Bush -- quashed his nomination by casting the lone vote against him.
Ping.
And if memory serves me correctly, Mitchell is currently supposed to be investigating steroids in baseball, or something like that.
Thank you kindly for that interesting bit of trivia.
That must have been the only veto in GWB's history.
