Another vanity on FR..but one that is important at this time.
I am seeing a bit of a disturbing trend going on that I had not seen in previous years...the absence of Christmas/Holiday Concerts and Plays going on at local schools around the country.
From New Jersey to Florida to Georgia to California these stories have been shared with me and I have even seen it happen with my own child.
My brothers kids are not having a performance at their school this year, a close friend who is a teacher in the Orlando area says it was "phased out" this year, another friend who is a Drama/Music teacher was told back in September at the start of the school year "not to bother with Christmas and focus on state competition's with script scenes from broadway shows and more broadway based performances...that Christmas shows were too filled with controversy."
The sad thing is when these things are mentioned to teachers and principals they are tending to say that they just don't or won't do them any longer.
When I was a kid we would spend 2 months at the very least working on Christmas concerts where we sang songs for Hannukah and Christmas and NEVER blinked at whether or not it was offensive to do so. We would put these shows together with 7 or 8 carols and do comedy and involve everyone who was in a music class..which of course...was everyone back then in elementary and jr.high...hell even in High School we did them.
So my question is...by a show of hands...are the programs vanishing across the country...vanishing in your neighborhood as well?
What a sad state of affairs this has come down to.
Walker Elementary is having a "Winter Party". Yes, they have heard from me..
our neighborhood had christmas caroling last year.
it was wonderful! they went to door to door to every
house singing all the traditional favorites and even
asked for requests. the crowd ended at the house
across the street for cocoa and cookies. :)
kwanzaa needs to stop being celebrated...it is not real...it is not a holiday...it is not anything but total crap made up by a gang member....it's disgusting how schools and other institutions still pimp this fiction...even the White House.
it is celebrated by many.
i am pleased that the christmas display will include nativity scenes just as the hanukkah display will include menorahs. :)

That looks like a line from an Amos 'N Andy show. One can easily imagine that it served as the motto of the Mystic Knights of the Sea, and that it was recited by such characters as The Kingfish, Andy Brown and Algonquin J. Calhoun.
In fact, however, the line that I have quoted is the motto of a real organization -- a real organization that was originally named United Slaves but now calls itself The Organization Us (or simply Us or US). It was created some 40 years ago, in Southern California, by a black racist who had begun life as Ron N. Everett but later had assumed the name Maulana Karenga.
Karenga -- known chiefly as the inventor of Kwanzaa, a fake "African" holiday that he contrived in 1966 -- has enjoyed a truly colorful career. He was a prominent black nationalist during the 1960s, when his organization was involved in various violent operations. He was sent to prison in 1971, after he and some of his pals tortured two women with a soldering iron and a vise, among other things. He emerged from prison in 1974, and a few years later -- in a maneuver that even The Kingfish might have found difficult -- he got himself installed as the chairman of the Department of Black Studies at California State University at Long Beach. CSULB wasn't the only American university that got the racial willies during the 1970s and set up a tin-pot black-studies department, but CSULB (as far as I know) was the only one that hired a chairman who was a violent felon.

Very interesting. I have to say that I was not familiar with "Bennetta" and the textbookleague group so I had to check it out. So typical of many in the industry - they have no platform and can't defend their opinions so they resort to name calling. Behe's book is an incredibly on-point argument against the evolutionary THEORY that we're expected to accept hook, line, and sinker. Why is our educational system so opposed to inquiry and free thought? (It's a rhetorical question.:))
There are many places on the net that point to the b.s.that is Kwanzaa...including Wikipedia.
My kids are having a Christmas Concert, all with traditional music. Of course, they attend a Christian school which explains it.
Yes, it really seems to be the only kind of institution that is hosting concerts and programs this year...still not one single public school I have yet to hear of is having one.
