Florida's national title chances rely on voters

ATLANTA -- Michigan had its chance against Ohio State and lost. Southern California couldn't even beat its struggling rival on Saturday, so the Trojans won't get an opportunity to play the No. 1 Buckeyes more than a month from now.

Florida is next in line, and after beating Arkansas 38-28 in Saturday night's SEC championship game at the Georgia Dome, the Gators deserve the opportunity to play Ohio State in the Jan. 8 BCS title game in Glendale, Ariz.

Florida finished 12-1 against one of the country's toughest schedules, won its first SEC title since 2000 and lost one game in a conference that is still regarded the sport's toughest from top to bottom.

"We certainly do," Florida coach Urban Meyer said when asked Saturday night whether he believes the Gators should get a chance to play Ohio State. "Florida belongs. The other team had a shot. We went 12-1, and I think the country wants to see the Southeastern Conference champion against the Big 10 champion. I think that's what this is all about."

But because of college football's inept system of determining which two teams will play for the national championship, voters around the country will decide Sunday whether the Gators or Wolverines will play the Buckeyes in the Arizona desert.

yeah it would....

If Florida gets picked, then LSU will end up in the Sugar most likely.

I think that there is a very good chance that it comes down to a singular computer.

I dont want a playoff, I weould like to see a plus one with only CCG winners guaranteed a chance and no gimmees given to Notre Lame, finally forcing them to join a conference. Its really easy 1 versus 4 and 2 versus 3, winners play each other. That way we can maintain alot of the bowls which does help alot of team with money and recruiting.

I dont think they are but hey thats my opinion, frankly Myths schedule was pretty darned weak and doesnt really show how good they are or arent. I personally dont think any team is very good this year though, at least not compared to prior years. In fact this might be the weakest year for Div 1 in many many years, perhaps since 1990.

I think during the bowl selection show tonight a 9 PM eastern. But if you check the polls and computers before hand you can come up with a very educated guess.

FWIW on the Gator Message boards the word is out that UF has jumped Michigan in the AP poll.

How come Michigan blew out Vandy going away, pulling their starters in the fourth quarter, when Florida gasped against them? Almost lost, as did Arkansas.

The only common opponent.

Vandy gave fits to virtually all the SEC teams, but not Michigan.

Then why has Florida been rated in back of Michigan for several weeks

Because Florida lost earlier and Michigan was unbeaten until the last game. Michigan, however, played a very light schedule until the last game - which they lost. Without the Ohio State game, which they lost, their strength of schedule would be very poor.

Michigans loss is as forgivable as it gets, Auburn dominated Fla in their loss.

This just shows that you should no longer comment on college football and instead just be a Michigan cheerleader. Florida went behind due to a fumble call that the SEC said should have went the other way. Auburn returned a fumbled kickoff with 0 seconds left on the clock for a TD to turn a 3 point tainted victory into a 10 point margin.

Besides, who knows if Ohio State is better than Auburn? OSU has played two good teams this year. If OSU or Michigan had to play LSU, Auburn, Alabama, Tennesse, UGA, FSU and Arkansas pretty much back to back they both lose at least one game - especially since 4 of those are rivaly games.

Because Vandy traveled to Michigan to play in a very unfamiliar environment while Vandy played very familiar SEC teams.

Do you really think that Wisconsin would lose only one game if they had to play UF, Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, UGA, Arkansas, South Carolina and Alabama? Wisconsin may be better than 1 or two of those teams, but play them back to back like SEC teams do and you will get beat even by a team that you're marginally better than.

Wisconsin travelled to Fla last year and destroyed Auburn. It wasn't even close.

Sorry, that's not a good excuse.

Both Colley and Sagarin rate Michigan's strength of schedule as more difficult than Florida's. I don't know where this fallacy comes from that claims Florida played such a difficult schedule, but it isn't based in fact.

2 chances? Playing in the horseshoe the first time is hardly even besides Michigan had the 3rd hardest rated schedule in the country.

Michigan played 5 teams with losing records, Florida only played 2. The only reason why Michigan's strength of schedule even has a pulse is because of the Ohio State game that they lost.

Michigan fans like to compare the loss to Auburn loss to loss to OSU, but never want to compare wins. Michigan beat Wisconsin who played only one ranked opponent the whole year, Michigan, and lost by 20 points. The other victory was against a very overhyped ND.

Now look at UF's victories, LSU (possibly the best team in the nation), UT (loaded), FSU, Spurrier's South Carolina, UGA and Alabama.

No - they might not lose any. At worst they'd have one loss. Hence the reason they hammered Auburn last year in the Capital One Bowl.

Personally I think Florida should be in the title game. I second that motion.

I third it, and 4th it.....

And this comes from a Razorback fan who was very disappointed by our loss last night.

But it was a great game...

They are pretty much the only ones. Michigan's loss to OSU is what boosts their strength of schedule so high. Consider only the teams that the two teams actually won and they aren't even close.

Also, it is much harder to play good, very good and great teams week after week then to play decent and bad teams the whole year and then pad the strength of schedule by playing one super great team.

Sagarin is the foremost expert on this. Who is placing Florida's SOS higher than Michigan's? (And don't come back with the goofy "opponent's winning percentage" metric)

Also, it is much harder to play good, very good and great teams week after week then to play decent and bad teams the whole year and then pad the strength of schedule by playing one super great team.

Only someone who's an SEC shill would make such a claim. If you want credibility, do try to advance reasonable arguments based in fact.

Yeah, bring up bowl games where the SEC has winning records every year while the Big-10 has losing a losing record almost every year.

I am going to help you out though and not hold the Big-10's crappy bowl record against them because bowl game, unless the national championship game, are meaningless. Teams are partying the whole time and taking advantage of the extra practice time to prepare for the NEXT YEAR.

The actual bowl games are just an exhibition that no one sheds a tear over.
