US actress Gwyneth Paltrow prefers British dinner talk

Oscar-winning US actress Gwyneth Paltrow feels dinner talk is far more interesting in her adopted homeland Britain than back in her native country. "I love the English lifestyle, it's not as capitalistic as America. People don't talk about work and money, they talk about interesting things at dinner," she told "NS," the weekend magazine supplement of daily Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias on Saturday.

"I like living here because I don't fit into the bad side of American psychology. The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans," the 34-year-old added.

Paltrow, who won a best actress Oscar for 1998's "Shakespeare in Love," lives in London with British band Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin whom she wed in 2003.

She said having US pop star Madonna, 48, who married British film director Guy Ritchie six years ago, nearby was another advantage to living in London.

"She's like an older sister. Everything I have gone through, she went through ten times worse and ten times longer. She gives me good advice about how to say no and take care of myself," said Paltrow.

I believe that might have something to do with the people she eats dinner with, no matter which country she happens to be in.

If she considers Americans uninteresting, maybe she should try dinner more often with ordinary people--you know, those people on ground who probably gawk slack-jawed at airplanes as they fly to L.A., or something.

I can imagine that dinner conversation with rich celebrities who consider how best to contribute to leftist causes while demanding big money for themselves would stupefy me after a while.

Kudos on the elitist witch part. However that should be elitist Socialist witch. The witch is a hypocritical facist who thinks because she earns more money than the rest of us "uncivilzed" Americans earn, She can tell us how to live. I have a great idea for her, When she does move over there, Why doesn't she give up her American citizenship?

No?

To what?

Wonder what Madonna advises her to say yes to?

The title you created is not the published title of the article.

We are trying to reduce the number of duplicate threads. When others use the correct title and then do a pre-post search to see if the article has already been posted, a thread with the wrong title will not show up on the search results, which will inevitably lead to a duplicate thread.

Please just use the original title when posting any published material.

Thanks.

You have to understand. She hangs around Hollywood and New York. That's the America she knows.

She has only experienced the remaining 99 percent of America from a distance of about 37,000 feet.

Then what's stopping you from moving there you little tramp?

You could have read your own article before posting.

But you're right about most urban working-class Brits; they are the definition of uncultured boors.

I'm the first to admit that it drives me crazy to get stuck in a NASCAR conversation with someone who obviously has no ability to keep up with current events. It used to happen all the time when my son played soccer, and for that reason I started ignoring the other parents and standing alone, by myself. But I'll be damned if I'll berate the entire nation of my birth on any level of intellectual pursuit. How many things have we given to the culture of the world? Music, acting, art, you name it we've done it. And that does not even mention the fact that we've led the world in scientific discovery for the past, what, 150 years?

I'm sure she regrets the fact that she never had George Bernard Shaw as a conversationalist seated next to herself.

Of course, GBS would have probably thought Gwyneth Paltrow to be an ignorant American sl-, er, dilettante, amusing, but hardly challenging.

No offense intended. I merely meant that both countries have their share of yahoos. I happen to be an Anglophile, so don't take too much umbrage. But it really is true that the Southern "red neck" culture along with its accent has its roots in the British underclasses of the 18th and 19th century.

'Dopey tart works vey well. It almost sings in its delivery. Thanks :)'

My pleasure, the English have had two millenia in which to perfect our misogynist terminology. You may also like to try 'dozy bint' and 'daft slapper'. :)

I know, I missed the first couple of sentences. I was scanning the piece for her quotes and missed the other information. Honest mistake.

ROFL, I guess Gweneth visits a different part of the UK than I do.

I've got friends near Manchester that I visit often and perhaps it's just a wee bit less refined than her more upper class London.

Whole sections of English towns are Islamofascist Pakistani Muslims who hate England and America and those darned Jews of course.

The remaining non Muslim population is often vomiting drunk puking their guts on the publio streets.

The crime rate in England is much higher than the American crime rate. Anything not bolted down and locked up tight will be stolen if you take your eye off it. Many people are on the dole or working a "fiddle".

It's true that the English and Irish are great talkers and can talk endlessly. That's great fun and usually pretty interesting, but there are hoards of drunken, violent, illiterate yobs who are are like animals.

They can drink just about anyone under the table.

'No offense intended.'

None taken and you are correct about the English working class thug culture - it was vital to the development of England. The battles of Crecy and Agincourt are great examples. The English army was largely made up of working class thugs with longbows and lead cudgels. The french knights refused to fight them as they were below them, so our thugs simply pulled the knights off their horses and and flattened their helmets with lead coshes until the frogs knights topped twitching! :D

Frogs lost 12000 men, England loses 250! ;-)
