My mother did the same thing. She hated that hardwood floor ... it was one of the old-fashioned ones, that you had to wax on your hands and knees.

She much preferred the vacuum cleaner ...!

We had hardwood floors in both houses we lived in while I was growing up. I remember the older home, and my Mama had my uncle and his brother come in once during the 8 years we lived there, sand the floor down and refinish it.

I LOVE hardwoods, and will have those all over our house whenever we remodel or build for ourselves, except in the bathrooms. we'll put radiant heat under the floor, using the pex tubing and hot water running through it.

I'm not sure if I want a pre-finished wood floor with the urethane finish, or seal it myself with an oil based finish. If we can do it before we move in, I might not mind doing it the old fashioned way. I just wouldn't try to do that if we're trying to live in the house at the same time. I don't have a problem with scratches and things like that. I think that gives a floor real character.
