Ping to RushLake, whom I met on another thread. This is as good a spot as any to start at the Hobbit Hole. This is one of my "product reviews" of interesting gadgets, one of the many things discussed here, along with "24", dogs, horses, weather (had a lot of that recently), and lembas.
I always had homemade ice cream for my birthday because we always celebrated it on July 4th, when we always had a cookout, then watched the fireworks in Pascagoula from across the river at our Fish Camp..
You'd think they would be in markets like the Northwest. Maybe they're moving slowly in that direction.

In one of my more momentous moments of my job (which shows how dull it can be), I had an honest snaig of help desk ticket 777777 last night. It's my biggest score since I got number 400000 last year, and shows how pathetic things are, if it's such a big deal for me.

We had a different kind of a day, ecurbh and I applied for jobs as grooms potentially, at a TB race horse barn. Would be interesting to be around that crowd.

No Trader Joe's, no Whole Foods, no Hobby Lobby. Which probably saves me a lot of money, but...

Well, it sounds exciting! Even if you guys haven't done it professionally, I doubt there are many folks in the area as experienced as you.
And considering your other jobs are flexible, you could probably do both, no?
There's lots of experienced horse people around, but it's not one of those skills that often shows up on a resume. We ended up giving our regular professional resumes and a cover letter that hopefully convinces them that we'd know what we are doing. The actual job description was not made real clear but we gathered that there are other staff that clean stalls, they need people that can move horses around, get them from the stall and prep them for the exercise riders, and then take them from the exercise riders when they're done and cool them down, bathe them, rub liniment and such on them, probably, and put them away. Also fence repair was mentioned... basic other barn duties.
Yes, we'd keep our current gigs... question is whether the barn job would want ~too~ much of our time... and we applied as a team, not just one of us. We want to do it because I think it'd be good experience for how a big equine facility is managed... to file away for our own boarding stable someday.... and we want to know how we'd do at that.

RE: Exp. Horseman/Farm help position(s)
My husband and I are very interested in interviewing for your available horseman/farm help position(s) as a team. We've only been told only a little bit about the position; i.e. that you are a Thoroughbred training facility. I don't know how many horses and how many staff you have employed or even if you are interested in part time or full time help, but I think my husband and I bring some skills with us that you might be able to use. Our horse skills will not show up in our employment history, so we wanted to expand on those in this letter.
I've had horses over twenty five years. We currently have three at home, and we mostly trail ride at the moment, though I used to train and show Arabians, as well as dabbling in a little dressage and jumping. My husband hadn't ridden before we met 3 ½ years ago, but he has proven to be a good hand with a horse and a quick learner.
Together we can handle most jobs that need to be done around a barn. We can handle horses, groom, clip, and bathe, and are skilled with moving, lunging, exercising and cooling horses. I am also skilled at evaluating horse health and welfare and soundness. I can give wormer and other meds and identify symptoms of colic or injury that might need attention. We certainly know how to clean and bed a stall, and we can buck hay bales, feed and water horses. We are handy with tools, we know how to fix and build fencing, we can build a good strong corner and pull wire, as well as build and repair wood fencing. We can help load and unload horses, as well as pull a horse trailer with the safety of the horses in mind.
My husband and I both work in ongoing separate employment from home. Both of our positions are flexible and allow us to seek additional work and still maintain those positions. The hours and days we'd be available are very negotiable.
The reason we are interested in this kind of employment, and the reason we are applying as a team, is that we hope to one day build and operate a boarding facility of our own. Working at your facility would give us both valuable experience in the operation and management of a large equine facility.

Now that I look at it again, it's not very well written, but they ain't hiring us to write... hopefully they'll get the gist of who we are.
It might be fun to hang out with that kind of crowd... big money horses... maybe even get to go to the track once in awhile. Who knows.
