The Hobbit Hole XXXII - Sweet is the sound of falling rain
The Freeper Hobbit Hole Blog ^ | December 1, 2006

Posted on 12/01/2006 12:55:15 PM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Glad you had a good trip and that everything made it home safely. Also that you have a couple of extra days to relax before going back to work.

Yeah, David has heard good things about Google, so that's why he's so interested.

I'm going to write and send a card, and think about what else to maybe send with it. We've lost many of our troops, of course, but I wanted to let her know that this one touches us, that her husband touched us.

I may not send it this week, but maybe next. I remember after losing mom that it was comforting to hear from people who also knew her and missed her or shared some connection, even if I didn't know them. And it was good to hear from people two weeks or even a couple months later. There will be a flurry of activity now, and then people will go back to their lives and that's when the loneliness really sets in.

I don't know, Rick, if they have kids, do you know?

None of the local news reports mention kids, just his wife. I'll let you know if I find out more.

On a much lighter, but still meaningful note, I thought I'd post this email I got today before g'nad does, since he's on the same list.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Get upset if you're too busy to talk to them for a week.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Are glad to see you after years, and will happily carry
on the same conversation you were having last time you met.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Never ask for food.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Are the reason you have no food.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Call your parents Mr. And Mrs.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Call your parents mom and dad.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Bail you out of jail and tell you what you did was
wrong.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Would be sitting next to you saying, "Damn...we screwed
up...but man that was fun!"

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Have never seen you cry.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Cry with you.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Borrow your stuff for a few days then give it back.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Keep your stuff so long they forget it's yours.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Know a few things about you.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Could write a book with direct quotes from you.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Will leave you behind if that's what the crowd is doing.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Will kick the whole crowds ass that left you behind.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Would knock on your door.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Walk right in and say, "I'm home!"

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Are for a while.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Are for life.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Have shared a few experiences...
MILITARY FRIENDS: Have shared a lifetime of experiences no civilian could
ever dream of...

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Will take your drink away when they think you've had
enough.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Will look at you stumbling all over the place and say,
"You better drink the rest of that, you know we don't waste...that's
alcohol abuse!!" Then carry you home safely and put you to bed...

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Will talk crap to the person who talks crap about you.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Will knock them the hell out for using your name in
vain.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Will ignore this.
MILITARY FRIENDS: Will forward this.

We had a little bit of snow yesterday morning, and it's been so cold, it's still on the ground.

It's just flurries off and on...mixed with the rain. Nothing's sticking so far.

It's New Years with the Stormhands!!!

1) Nana ain't well. Teeth are still an issue and she can't eat solid food. Appointment is Tuesday. First we could get.

2) Jr. got up nauseous about 6 this mornin'. He ain't thru yet.

3) Luke is, well...Luke. I think he's got cabin fever.

4) Mrs. is exhausted 'cause she's still recoverin' from sinus infection and has to continue to tend to Nana and now Jr..

5) I'm refusing to believe I could possibly have anything like what Jr's got. I don't really think I do. I'm just tired...which of course leaves me vulnerable to the virus.

Between y'all and me...midnight cain't get here quick enough...

Well, that was a bit of a surprise. May just be cool enough for that fire we usually have on New Year's Eve, pondering if we'll stay up to see big glass ball drop. Didn't notice the Casino Talent Contest advertised in the TV Section.

You know...seriously, that's something that struck me when I got out of the military. It was really hard for awhile, dealing with the fact that coworkers just went home at the end of the day, for instance - lives weren't shared in the same way.

You know, you're probably right. I could watch the TV news, hmmm, but don't usually. Might be easier to stay awake..

Sounds like it's time to pass around the cold-eze, Alkaseltzer plus, and medicinal beverages according to each's need.
