Chip-Wrecked! Thousands Of Bags Of Doritos Wash Ashore In Outer Banks
WTKR NEWS ^ | 11-30-06

Hatteras Island is famous for its shipwrecks. But Thursday locals experienced their first ever "chip-wreck".

A cargo container loaded with thousands of bags of Doritos Tortilla Chips washed ashore on the beach near Frisco and broke open.

The container apparently fell off a ship. The chips scattered for about a half a mile, and some even floated as far north as the Bonner bridge.

Arley Spake photographed the broken container. Spake works for Frito-Lay, the company that makes Doritos. His wife Janice joined him at water's edge.

"It was really weird," said Spake. (Arley) was taking pictures for Frito-Lay, we still don't know what happened. Lots of Doritos, lots of people putting them in garbage bags."

Many of the chips were sealed and still edible. Dozens of people were seen gathering the chips and taking them off the beach. Jessica Maxfield, who is doing an internship with the National Park Service, grabbed a couple of bags.

"I was doing a bird survey. The gulls love the Doritos."

The National Park Service does not like the Doritos, however; the beach is protected. The container is now at the National Park Service maintenance area.

As for the accident, it's still unclear which ship lost the cargo or to which port it was being shipped.

I know, but I'm thinking she just said she was going to use them for her gull survey and ripped open those packs the moment she got in her car.

I live very close to the ocean and we have way too many gulls.

I've always thought that shooting gulls would be a great way to practice one's skeet skills. It would also reduce the inflated gull populations. Probably against any number of laws, though, not to mention what on earth do you do with the meat?

Bait crab pots?

The gulls love the Doritos.

Gulls love anything they can eat.

I've heard of people doing just that while out fishing. Maybe it's legal over three miles offshore? LOL

Obviously, these bags of Doritos were driven insane and committed suicide because of the use of low-frequency sonar by U.S. Navy submarines!

LOL! Perhaps I'll try that the next time I'm at Nags Head. If I get bored enough.

"Seagulls will eat just about anything, though."

Remember the seagulls in "Finding Nemo?" They went around saying "Mine! Mine! Mine!" Captured the true seagull spirit, that.

Never mind me. I was thinking of Fritos. It's Friday and it was a long week.

Sincerely,

Remember: lights off at night on the beach so that chips can return to the sea.
