Danny Dean Slick, 27, faces up to five years in prison for giving “fictitious and fraudulent” statements in July 2005. Slick’s sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 20 in U.S. District Court in Sioux City.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean Berry said Slick reached a plea deal in which he will not be prosecuted for the first of two counts of misleading authorities. Berry said Slick’s plea agreement contains a “cooperation provision.”
Slick, wearing a navy blue prison jump suit, spoke quietly and with few words on Monday, responding to U.S. Magistrate Judge John Jarvey’s questions with “yes” and “no” answers.
Slick was indicted and arrested in June, but released after pleading not guilty. He has been incarcerated since he was arrested again in August for violating terms of his release.
Family members said they were hopeful information in the 13-page, sealed plea document could bring authorities closer to arresting Evelyn’s killer.
“There has to be a reason for them to have sealed it,” said Brandi Hoffmann of Des Moines, who is Evelyn’s aunt. “I don’t think Dan Slick personally killed Evelyn, but I think he knows who did and what happened to her.”
Evelyn’s stepmother, Lindsey Christie of Waterloo, and Hoffmann’s mother, Sandy Kuykendall of Floyd, also sat through the approximately 20-minute hearing.
Court documents say Slick changed his story and tried to mislead FBI agents when they interviewed him at his Charles City residence on July 3, 2005.
According to Slick’s indictment, he initially told agents his roommate Randy Patrie, 33, was at their Charles City apartment for all but 10-15 minutes on July 1, 2005, after they stopped at Evelyn’s apartment to see her mother’s fiance at about 2:30 a.m., hours before she was reported missing.
In a second interview, the indictment said, Slick reported Patrie was gone for several hours and said Patrie said the next day that he went to get drugs from an acquaintance named “Porky.”
Slick admitted he lied to agents when he claimed to not know Porky’s name or address.
Special Agent Jim Wertz of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, who is the lead investigator on Evelyn’s case, and FBI Special Agent Randy Van Gent also attended Slick’s hearing.
What's disturbing to me is that this new one posted here doesn't really say anything about the fiance! And he's evidently got a history with child porn.
I still did not find out whether or not Evelyn was molested and it makes me sick that this such a growing problem in our country, or anywhere else for that matter.

It is offensive to my how judges give a pass to violent pedophiles, such as Judge John Connor, and no outrage in the media such as we get when somebody dares to mouth off.
Just another example reported today in The Washington Times: Judge Thomas Stansfield of Maryland gave Lynn Kozimor, 27, probation for sexually molesting two girls, one 13 and the other 14, and also raped a 14-year-old boy. This pervert was convicted and faced 14 years in prison. Yet Judge Stansfield saw fit to give her a pass.
When I read the headline, I thought it was about Bill Clinton.
It looks to me like the fiance is involved and has a history of at least 3 years of child porn.
Casey Frederiksen, that former, so-called "fiance" ('shack-up' was probably more accurate) is unquestionably a filthy piece of human debris.
But, unless something has changed, Evelyn's paternal grandfather—who maintains the EvelynMillerMemories blog—believes Frederiksen had nothing to do with Evelyn's murder.

It's positively evil to take the one thing from a child that s/he should be able to ALWAYS depend upon from ANY adult: t-r-u-s-t.
Regardless, that 'debris' was there when that girl was injured/abducted. He knows what happened and he should pay for allowing it.
The mother of Evelyn Miller was apparently hospitalized for an evaluation after police found her in a neighbor's backyard with a concealed kitchen knife.
Noel Miller, 23, of Charles City, was arrested Friday on a warrant for going armed with a knife.
According to court documents, Miller called 911 on Christmas. When Charles City police arrived at her home, they found Miller in neighboring back yards.

She allegedly had a kitchen knife with a 6-1/2 inch blade concealed up her shirt sleeve.
A record of calls to the police department shows two reports of suspicious activity were made overnight on Dec. 24 and 25 from Miller's residence.
Police reported to the house once at 10:28 p.m. on Dec. 24 and again at 2:04 a.m. on Dec. 25.
Following the second call, Charles City Police Chief Mike Wendel said, someone from the residence was taken fo the hospital for evaluation.
Miller pleaded not guilty to the knife charge and was released on her own recognizance on Saturday, after spending othe night in Floyd County Jail.
A preliminary hearing for the serious misdemeanor was scheduled for Jan. 26.
Miller's daughter Evelyn disappeared July 1, 2005, from her family's apartment in rural Floyd. Following a massive search, the 5-year-old's body was found on July 6, 2005, in the Cedar River about two miles from the apartment she lived at with mother and Miller's fiance Casey Frederiksen and the couple's two sons.
Evelyn's death was ruled a homicide. The investigation continues without any arrests or named suspects.
A court on Monday was scheduled to terminate Miller's parental rights to her sons, who were ages 1 and 2 when their sister was killed.
Frederiksen, 27, of Charles City, was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison in August for downloading pornographic images of children onto his computer.

my gut tells me she knows alot more than she's letting on, the pressure is getting to her,mix that with some meth or crack,you have a very volatile and violent person..just think about it,she lost casey,her boys and evelyn,she is all alone now,paranoia sets in...after today her rights (to the boys)will be terminated..thank God for small favors(well i would say this is a BIG favor)
