http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061127/NEWS/61127009&lead=1 Ames, Ia. Texas co-defensive coordinator Gene Chizik will be Iowa States new football coach. Chizik arrived this morning at the Ames airport and will be introduced during a 6 p.m. event today at Hilton Coliseum. "We were challenged to get him," Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard told The Des Moines Register minutes before Chizik's airplane from Austin, Texas, landed. "We were told we wouldn't be able to get him by a lot of people. He's the real deal." Chizik worked as an assistant coach at Auburn, the University of Central Florida, Stephen F. Austin and Middle Tennessee State before joining the Longhorns staff in 2005. He also served as assistant head coach and linebackers coach for Texas this season. Texas (9-3) is ranked No. 17 this season dropping its last two games. The Longhorns are 23rd in the nation in total defense and second in the Big 12 allowing 291.9 yards per game. Texas is 100th out of 119 Division I-A teams, however, in overall pass defense, giving up an average of 233.1 yards. Chizik was named 2004 winner of the Broyles Award, given annually to the nations top assistant coach. Auburn finished 2004 ranked No. 2 in the nation with a 13-0 record. As a player, Chizik competed in the 1981 Peach Bowl for Florida. As a coach, he has been on the sidelines for the 2005 Sugar Bowl, 2003 Music City Bowl and 2003 Capital One Bowl with Auburn, as well as the 1989 Gator Bowl and 1988 Citrus Bowl with Clemson. He and his wife, Jonna, are parents of identical twin daughters Landry and Kennedy and a son, Cally. Chizik is a 1985 graduate of Florida. Many televised and published reports in Iowa and beyond on Sunday said Central Michigans Brian Kelly would be named to replace coach Dan McCarney, who announced he would not return after 12 seasons. But Kelly said in a Mid-American Conference teleconference this morning that he would remain with the Chippewas. The best thing I can tell you is that they have a press conference scheduled today at 6 oclock and Ill be practice at Central Michigan, Kelly said. In a letter to Iowa State fans on Sunday, Cyclone athletic director Jamie Pollard wrote: "I am absolutely thrilled to share with you that we came to an agreement Sunday with our No. 1 choice from the first day of the search." Iowa State conducted known interviews with San Diego coach Jim Harbaugh and Nebraska offensive coordinator Jay Norvell. Cyclone officials were granted permission to talk with Kelly Saturday morning. No other official candidates have been made public during the search. Tonight's event is open to the public with doors opening at 5:15. today's headlines * ISU hires Texas assistant Chizik 10:55 am * King: U.S. must beef up military presence in Iraq 1:28 pm * Waukee council to discuss renaming Iowa highway 11:25 am * Cael's Hilton debut: Near perfection Other news from the web latest headlines by topic * Sports * NCAA Sports * University of Texas NCAA * Texas Longhorns NCAA Football * NCAA Football Powered by Topix.net ADVERTISEMENT

His defense did such a wonderful job for Texas against Kansas State and Texas A&M this month, who wouldn't be happy for such a head coach?

Forget the fact that alot of Texas defensive talent is injured and still they managed to have the number 1 run defense and the 23rd defense overall.

Now Now! As a fellow Horns fan, I understand your pain but, A&M only scored 12 points (I'm still scratching my head over the K St. thing) and We did win the NC last season.
We should be more concerned knowing Mack Brown is Alabama's first choice for headcoach.

The prognosis on top assistants going head is mixed. For every Bob Stoops, you have several Greg Robinsons (lousy) or even Bob Davies (decent to good, but not top flight). I'm surprised Chizik took the ISU job, especially with the ASU job open. ASU has much better ability, as a school, to bring in top talent, and ISU has never been much better than a laughingstock of any conference they've been in.
I also think its much easier to compete in the Pac 10 right now than in the Big 12, especially given recruiting. ISU is way down the list of recruiting hot beds anywhere near their part of the country.
I think he'll make ISU a bowl competitive team every year, but I don't think it'll be much better than that. ISU had the last couple of years to compete in the Big 12 North with the entire North below par. Now, with teams like KSU getting better and Kansas at least a decent team, its going to be tough.

He was a great defensive coordinator (at both Auburn and Texas). Will be interesting to see how he rates as head coach at ISU.

One thing is for certain if he turns that program around he wont be there very long because the NFL or a big purse school will come calling.

I agree it's a good hire for Iowa State, and the state of Iowa generally.
Don't think they should have fired Mac, but I'm glad they didn't hire another HAWKEYE - was fearful they would grab Jay Norvell and we'd be surrounded by Hawkeyes, with Wisky and ISU. Hard to root against former Iowa players.
