Choosing The Right Vista
VIA Arena has a very good guide to choosing the right Vista for your needs. There is a handy chart that shows you which features are in the different versions of Vista and what they mean to you. This is good reading for those of you planning to upgrade to Vista.
At a glance, here is a list of features that are not in every edition of Windows Vista. If the table cell is highlighted in blue then the corresponding features are in the corresponding edition of Vista. This should be your first place to look. If there are features you need or want you'd better get the edition that has them.

The cracked Ultimate ISOs will be available worldwide over the internet (except China, where the pirate DVDs will be manufactured).
LOL!
Oh, you're one of those. Sorry I posted to you.
For Dell, XP Pro = upgrade to Vista Business; XP Home or MCE = upgrade to Vista Home Premium. I found out because I just ordered a new Core 2 Duo XPS machine from Dell.
yea, maybe the business makes the most sense... hmm...? I don't need OR wan't parental controls.. so.. it has the disk image stuff... hmmm... but it is a little more $... maybe i'll just go for Home Premium and stick with aftermarket backup ex. Acronis true image.
Cool, thanks for the info.
Those?
True, true...
But then again, why even use Vista in the first place...8^)
Why not?
Why even use a computer? :D
IMHO, all of the features that made it worth upgrading (WinFS, better encryption to name a couple) were stripped because of time constraints. The only new feature that I can really see (after putzing with it in the lab) is the NT 6.0 kernel--and evenso, that's not a big issue with me.
Now, Vista is little more than XP on steroids--and as for the visual effects, I can get pretty much the same results on my cruddy emachines desktop (mind you, it has only 256 ram) by spending $20 or so for Windowblinds and d/l the vista pack...
Thus, I fail to see a compelling reason for most people to upgrade right away--the closest reason would be novelty, and IMHO, that's not necessarily the best reason to upgrade the OS.
I suppose down the line there will be apps that require Vista--at that point, then it would make sense to upgrade. But not right away--for most everybody, XP will work just fine for the time being IMHO.
It is very ODD to me that Vista Business will NOT have parental controls... wouldn't businesses WANT those features? Or they would just block those(websites etc.) at the source.
...when you have a typewriter 8^)
64 bit, media center, Aero, SMP, more memory support, better security
Oh yea and DirectX 10
Not necessarily.
Many companies have their own set of programs they use for filtering--and there are a few large ones I know of that have written their own...
Vista Business doesn't have these in deference to business customers, as the primary target for V. Business is the corporate customer.
Okay, well I disagree. I'm using Vista Enterprise (as I type on my work machine). Vista is far from XP-on-steroids and I'm quite happy with it. Your requirements are far different than mine if you don't see any value in it.
yea, they block it out now at the source... although in a small business this probably would be a welcome feature.
Meh, most of those features I could just get a new computer with an AMD64 under the hood and run an x86-64 enterprise Linux (e.g. RH, SLED, etc.)...8^)
Well, maybe not Aero, but that doesn't matter IMHO--after all, it's just slick eye candy.
True, true...
