I dunno. My memory's not that great. I think it's hereditary...or at least that's my excuse for blaming my mother.

Back-country skiing is hiking out into the mountains to ski, i.e. no resort, chair lifts, etc.
I do both alpine and telemark skiing, and usually people will 'skin' to the top. Climbing skins go on the bottom of your ski, and have a fine hair on the bottom that allows the ski to slide forward but not backwards.
You can get special downhill bindings that release in the back, so you can skin upwards, then lock in place to go down. Telemark skis are somewhat of a cross between downhill and cross country skis. An apline ski, with a binding that only connects at the toe.
I'll have to see if I can find some pics, helps to visualize better!

Let's end the pity party, shall we? We have a lot to be thankful for.
Good idea. I know myself, I went through helluva lot this year with two cats passing away, although we pulled a third one through, but at least we are all still here and I'm here to give thanks for what I have. I had to work 5 hours today, we have half year closing and I think this week will be Hell until Thursday close but I'm thankful for the job I have, otherwise I'd be in a real jam. Anyways, I only work 3 hours Friday so the decorating we were going to start this weekend, we will do then. B-)

Yeah, I remember my co-worker told me that in Alaska, there is a saying, "If you hit a moose, you lose." The deer here in the Pittsburgh area are bad enough though, mom, when she went to work, both yesterday and today, she saw three deer crossing the road. I've seen them in my yard too, that is, until I tell them to "beat it!" B-)
Basically, deer are related to goats and cows, being ruminants, but they seem to be "rats with long legs" to me. B-P

No doubt about that. I think a good-sized Alaskan bull moose can weigh 1600+ lbs.
Deer are becoming a nuissance in most places, why they don't sell more deer tags is beyond me. I guess the AR/enviro crowd will find a good way to distribute birth control or something similar to them, as opposed to hunting.

Well, before I explain that, I'd need to give another update:
I quit my job. Tuesday was my last day, and I'd been working there about 8 months. I did come to the decision that it was time to move on (for reasons unrelating to this). Now here's a rough outline of how it went:
Interestingly enough, she was actually the head of my department. Because of how the schedules were arranged, she and I ended up working together most of the time. It took us forever, but we eventually struck up a friendship, and then when she was going through something really awful she sort of turned to me for support. We started growing a lot closer, and finally decided to start going out.
Our first date was Saturday night, and it went great, so we are definitely going to keep going out. So...I have a girlfriend now! Of course, the downside is I REALLY need another job.

Thats pretty cool. It is nice when things progress gradually like that, and not very fast.
I'm very happy for you. Hey, I'd take your 'upside' to the 'downside'!!
The Dems haven't had a chance to crush our good economy, so you shouldn't have much of a problem finding work. Any idea what you would like to do?
I will start my new job on Dec 11, which I'm pretty excited about.

sounds like back country & cross country skiing are about the same but your terrain is more challenging. I guess you would say I do the "classic" style. MY equipment is pretty basic (and old) & my techniques very basic: edging, snowplow & herringbone. I never really go fast as we are never in areas that are easy with our skill levels. Also photography is part of every trip & every activity I do
I have never heard of the ski apparatus to prevent "back sliding"..
We also do NOT go on regular trails or groomed cross ski trails..I love just exploring the open areas.. fun to cut through deep fresh snow in rugged areas.

Oh, cool! You found work now? Congrats!
I was tired of the nightmare that is retail, and want to get a start in office temping.
