Microsoft Internet Explorer 7

Posted on 11/21/2006 2:18:30 PM PST by BulletBobCo

Looks like Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 is trying to be forced on to one's computer. My updates just converted Explorer 6 to 7.

Well...I guess you've been around the block a few times at that. An MCSE. Congrats. That's a tough one to get. Not that the CompTIA is a cakewalk either.
It's just that your statement seemed like one that so many others folks here make when they want to bash MS.
I'll join right in on occasion but for good reason.

As for the "foisting" issue...I may have had a nasty or two snuck by me but I don't believe so. Is ignorance bliss? Who knows. I do know that I have always set things up with Windows so that I am notified before download and do the reading and investigate what is what before installing. Mostly it's ok but in the case of IE7, there have been issues. So I keep it off my machine by deselecting it each time, no matter how it's packaged.

But I love my PC.

I'm ready to go to Firefox.

I've never regretted making the switch.

Many kudos to you, my techno-sister :)
I just got addicted to Apple 8 years ago and I just like them, no snobism from my side. I got my first one as a Christmas present (the first iMacs running on first version of OS X) and literally I had it up and running within minutes, NO issues with using a brand new OS which I never used before. Got the new 24" iMac last year and I am now pondering about getting a MacBook...we'll see!

It just seems to me that Mac users and PC users have different approaches to computing. A Mac comes set up, ready to run. OS-X is a wonderful OS. However, I can do things with my PC--personalize it, for instance--that you just can't do with a Mac. And I can run Linux on my other hard drive--(K)ubuntu is really nice. I have fun with my PC.

Ivan,
You've mention that you've customized Swiftfox, would you mind telling me what you did and why?

Thank you

"Start/Run/msconfig -- Startup tab. You can deselect what you don't want."

If you're not to literate with these things, how do you know what is ok to trash and what isn't? Thanks in advance.

Thanks much.

I guess I'd need one of those multi operating system shells, too. Wheee.

Appreciate your thoughtful inputs.

I have no idea how it is for browsing the Internet (I use Firefox), but I like the text rendering engine. It really improves the way HTML formatted text looks in Outlook.

I noticed one bit of odd behavior from IE7: It doesn't necessarily recognize intranet addresses as being part of our intranet. We do our timesheets on IE using a web-based program. The pages are generated on the local intranet and the users' browsers look for those pages at a local IP address; 192.168.1.10. By default, IE7 allows laxer security for local addresses (which the timesheet program requires) and it is set to automatically detect them. However, it fails to recognize the IP address as a local address and applies stricter security. By definition, a 192.168.xxx.xxx address is local! I had to write a procedure for our employees that walks them through the process of adding the local address as a local address.

What I really dislike about IE7 is the text string search, Edit > Find on this page. In IE6, the search stopped at the bottom of a page. You knew that you were done searching when that happened. In IE7 it doesn't stop, but automatically loops back to the top, without notification. So, in IE6 it is always obvious when you can stop searching, and in IE7 you have to pay close attention to see if the loopback has occurred. Very annoying.

The Firefox 2 string search is much better. It tells you instantly while you type whether or not your string is anywhere on the page, and tells you when the search has looped back to the top of the page.

"I've always wondered why MS can't seem to get FTP, a protocol that has existed for flippin' ever, to work well."

I eventually got sick of web browsers messing up FTP and dislike most FTP apps and DL managers out there. I just do FTP by command shell. GUI is for noobs anyway. :p
