Southerners wrote PLENTY of history about the War. They are widely represented in the writings of just about every surviving general and plenty of the politicians.

Plus the Southern view was widely spread as romantic for the first 30 or 40 years of the popular media. There was NOTHING like GWTW or Birth of a Nation promoting the Union view.

WVA didn't exist when the war broke out. They were not considered Northern but were Loyal. You are correct that it took some time before Freedom was legalized there.

Funny but I learned exactly that in the public schools.

Sure he did, in this case, the centralization of power in a republic of states. Here's Hitler on the subject

To Marx it was a glorious workers' revolution and aside from getting that totally wrong, he got everything else wrong in his letter, even saying that the North was invaded by the South as instigation for the war. Believe he even blew it on the date of the Morrill Tariff. Also, the war was NEVER about slavery (Lincoln ignored the four slave states in the Union and said he wanted blacks expelled from the US altogether). That's probably THE biggest lie perpetrated by the ignorant on this country. Lincoln wanted to collect a massive tariff on the south for his Whig agenda (yes, I know he was a Republican but they hated him and his idol was Henry Clay). Lincoln was about one thing and one thing only: total power of the federal govt.

FYI, the "yankees" (READ: inhabitants of the northern states) didn't want the war AT ALL. The protest against it was incredible, worst of all in NYC.

The Civil War was the most unpopular war in this country's history. Iraq is lame by comparison. Imagine Bush suspending habeas corpus, laying siege to American cities, locking up editors and conscientious objectors, and the military opening up on rioting New Yorkers and you get some sense of it. Dude got his head blown off for it. It was incredibly, incredibly unpopular.
