To: stand watie

FYI, the "yankees" (READ: inhabitants of the northern states) didn't want the war AT ALL. The protest against it was incredible, worst of all in NYC.

The Civil War was the most unpopular war in this country's history. Iraq is lame by comparison. Imagine Bush suspending habeas corpus, laying siege to American cities, locking up editors and conscientious objectors, and the military opening up on rioting New Yorkers and you get some sense of it. Dude got his head blown off for it. It was incredibly, incredibly unpopular.

exactly so.

had the 1864 election been FAIR/honest, lincoln would have been back in IL, being a "crooked railroad lawyer".
