The Algerians must've really abused the plane to turn it into an unrecoverable basket case in such a short time.

BTTT
Keep planes young. I hate that American runs these 25+ year old MD-80's. Time for them to recycle to totally new planes as well. Latest 737's and 787's I'd say.

Good, maybe I can keep mine flying a few more years now. I need rear door to replace the one I'm holding shut with a wire hanger, and a nosecone to replace the one I dented pulling into the garage.

The aircraft in question apparently is one of only three 777-200A models equipped with GE90-76B engines. Most 77A's like United's fleet are Pratt-engined. And everyone seems to be in love with the economics of a new 777-300ER model. It's pretty much of an orphan that won't fit anyone's fleet. Also it's been parked for 18-months and is in need of a D-check (expensive, heavy maintenance). So it seems it's worth more in pieces than as a fix-er-upper.
I thought the Air Force was going to get these planes to replace their older refuelers. Anyone out there know about this?
Eleven years? Can't they just retrofit winglets and fat engines and keep flying?
I feel sad today because I just saw a photo of the SS Norway (ex SS France) at the breakers beach in India awaiting scrapping. She was the first cruiseship I traveled on back in 1985.
