The Algerians must've really abused the plane to turn it into an unrecoverable basket case in such a short time.

All the airlines want the ER model. It has more value as parts than as a working aircraft. No 777 has ever been written off, so the only source of parts is Boeing and they are all new.
To: PeterFinn
VARIG is Brazilian, not Algerian. And the non-ER variant isn't particularly desirable these days; United, who was the launch customer and has a bunch of early non-ER versions, has many of them parked in the desert (though I don't think they're being sold or broken up anytime soon).

Must be FUBAR. No joke. The USAF has planes that are 50, and they have led hard lives.

Keep planes young. I hate that American runs these 25+ year old MD-80's. Time for them to recycle to totally new planes as well. Latest 737's and 787's I'd say.

They'll probably replace the Mad Dogs with Boeing's Y-1.

No, Y2 is the 787. Y1 will be the 737 replacement. Y3 will be the 777/747 replacement.

I'd rather ride in an old MD-80 than a new Grey Hound Bus with wings 777 any day. I hate 777s.

Good, maybe I can keep mine flying a few more years now. I need rear door to replace the one I'm holding shut with a wire hanger, and a nosecone to replace the one I dented pulling into the garage.
