WASHINGTON, Nov. 13, 2006 -- After decades of secrecy, the Air Force today acknowledged that it flew Communist-built fighters at the Tonopah Test Range northwest of Las Vegas.
From 1977 through 1988, the program, known as Constant Peg, saw U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine aircrews flying against Soviet-designed MiG fighters as part of a training program where American pilots could better learn how to defeat or evade the communist bloc's fighters of the day. |
Just a little historical perspective
Finally out of the closet eh?
I always wondered about those MiG fighters I saw being trailered thru Tonopah - and all the funny electronic signatues floating about.
Now, will area 51 be opened?
LOL
And I thought it was called Red Hat Squadron.
Well now that it is out of the bag, I guess it will all be shut down, to save money of course.
And the ex-Navy A-7 *Corsair IIs* they flew out of there. One of which parked itself into an Indianapolis hotel in 1987 after the USAF Major driving it punched out. Nine on the ground were killed.
That was what the patches read.
Stand by, there'll be a statement from the Assistant to the SecDef about that:
Greep! FrizzxleFroxxell,q'uant. Peekaa'd! Ack!
[He says, *No. It is not yet the Time of Harvesting.*]
The A7 belonged to the F117 crowd, they flew them as a cover.
