The ***Official*** Singles Thread: Remembering SkyLab
10 November 2006 | Army Air Corps

SkyLab

America's First Space Station

Skylab is "cool" for a variety of reasons.  First, it is a manned space exploration subject.  Second, it was a spin-off of the Apollo Programme.  Third, it is an example of how to make the most of what you have on hand.  Also, Skylab is a story of determination and missed opportunities.  In addition, there was a bit of hoopla surrounding Skylab.  There were commemorative medallions, bottles, stamps, and other items.  NASA intended for the Shuttle to operate with Skylab, but the Shuttle programme was about two years behind schedule.  Congressional cuts deprived NASA of the funds to boost Skylab into a higher orbit and replace failing gyroscopes - the station was allowed to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere on 11 July 1979.

Skylab Launch: 14 May 1973.  Severe damage was sustained during launch, including the loss of the station's micrometeoroid shield/sun shade and one of its main solar panels. Debris from the lost micrometeoroid shield further complicated matters by pinning the remaining solar panel to the side of the station, preventing its deployment and thus leaving the station with a huge power deficit.

Skylab I: 25 May 1973.  Pete Conrad, Paul Weitz, and Joseph Kerwin.  The station underwent extensive repair during a spacewalk by the first crew.  Lasted 28.03 days.

Skylab II: 28 July 1973.  Alan Bean, Jack Lousma, and Owen Garriott.  Lasted 59.46 days.

Skylab III: 16 November 1973.  Gerald Carr, William Pogue, and Edward Gibson.  Lasted 84.05 days.

I think most of us are shellshocked to some degree & waiting to see how the "leaders" work things out. I intend to continue to be busy with my phone & email to my reps/senators on every pertinent issue. Some of the dipsticks (like Sherrod Brown) will be like talking to the dead. His socialist/communist manner is very strong

I haven't had much radio on either (I normally any more just listen in car).. I dont have cable so I have to go out of my way to see Fox or any news program, and I mostly do NOT do it.

Bev, I guess you are referring to the RepublicanMeet group?

I know that was confusing for me to handle also. I put down cats on the blank (as I chose a pix of my dogs & me for one) and also put in the comment sections about my pets.

Same w/career.. I have had 3 careers & listed them in the comment sections.

You are ahead of me. I don't even know how to find out how many are registered at various ages/states etc.

If you paid by credit card you can start communicating/chatting etc now. I paid by e-check (don't have/use credit cards) and so I have to wait for a week until it clears.

I have some messages, flirts & mis items & cant see them until them.

It is different & interesting.. another diversion, as if either one of us with our busy lives need it.

There

There is a certain ATRW gent that I wish would decide to go visit you.. I think almost everyone thinks that but he seems pretty oblivious to most except the family, chickens & clean up efforts in his area.

men

sigh

I did note your weather. In line (LONG) at store I was watching the TV they have above checkout lines.. CNN ..ugh.. but they were featuring weather in your area. You guys are really getting slammed

oh thanks.. I at one time was searching the Internet for pix & then had a duh moment.. I have hundreds of gig of pix.. on several computers & many external hard drives.

Almost anything I want in the outdoors is there.. so I am trying to use them. I often just put them together very hurriedly Sun morning however. This winter I am hoping to take time to do some searching out of many of my fav pix.

I have promised Meg to also get flower pix to her (one of her specialities).. I have many..but they are scattered within the other groups. I organize my pix by year, month, date..and after the date put the type of outing..Like

0110606HikePenBirthdayPenPP

that is Nov 6, O6 = what I did, where (Pen is short for Peninsula) event if any & the PP is the main person I was with.I have one or two almost every day & some of the outings have 500 or more pix. so it is a big job to catalog etc.

NOW, I often have a slew of flower pix associated with one. Or often various animal/fowl.. like blue heron, geese, turtles, deer etc.. whatever we come accross on outings.

Dinner in Montana

This is one of the best thing I've read in ages!!!!! I wish I could go there for dinner!!!!

Montana Restaurant:
This is a great story! The radio station America FM was doing one of its "Is Anyone Listening?" bits this morning. The first question was, "Ever have a celebrity pull up with the 'Do you know who I am?' routine?"
A woman called in and said that a few years a go, while visiting her cattle rancher uncle in Billings, MT, she had occasion to go to dinner at a restaurant that does not take reservations. The wait was about 45 minutes; many ranchers and their wives were waiting.

Ted Turner and his ex-wife Jane Fonda came in the restaurant and wanted a table. The hostess informed them that they'd have to wait 45 minutes. Jane Fonda asked the hostess, "Do you know who I am?" The hostess answered, ?Yes, but you'll have to wait 45 minutes." Then Jane asked if the manager was in. When the manager came out, he asked, "May I help you?" "Do you know who we are?" both Ted and Jane asked. "Yes, but these folks have been waiting, and I can't put you ahead of them."

Then Ted asked to speak to the owner. The owner came out, and Jane again asked, "Do you know who I am?" The owner answered, "Yes, I do. Do you know who I am? I am the owner of this restaurant and I am a Vietnam Veteran. Not only will you not get a table ahead of my friends and neighbors who have been waiting here, but you also will not be eating in my restaurant tonight or any night. Good bye."

Only in America - what a great country.

To all who received this e-mail, this is a true story and the name of the steak house is:
Sir Scott's Oasis Steakhouse, 204 W. Main, Manhattan , MT 59741 (406) 284-6929

If you ever get there, give this fellow a sharp salute, buy a steak, and tip the waitress. Keep passing this on. We should never forget our national traitor! And let's not forget what "our gal" Hillary said to the troops in Iraq , "This war has no support from the American public."

That is just AWESOME Dolly! Thank you for posting it. As an avid pooch lover, though no longer able to have one in this place, it was great to see, and there's a wee little tear in my eye .. ;)

BTW, let me know experiences with that RepublicMeet site .. interesting.

Well, I am very impressed with the quality of men I have encountered ...if that can be the word. I cannot yet "interact"...chat, etc until my check clears.

I have had 65 look at my profile, have lots of "winks" and bookmarks & about 8 messages in addition to quite a few invites to chat.

I cant get any of it yet. so time will tell..

Doesn't hurt to sign up & check out the water, more or less

Last note.. I always have help at comuter w/cats. One on keyboard, one chases mouse, one or two on monitor & one or more in lap.

Computing time for me is fun & play time for them. We all know how much fun it is to have cat tails swish across our screen monitors.

Night (this time for sure)

You mean how long has it been? :P Hmmm...I left at the end of August. That was the last time I was home. And I have a meeting with my boss tomorrow to talk about a paid internship for next semester so I may be back in DC again.
