Ten Worst Games of All Times[Video Games]

The Worst Game of All Time

1. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (Atari, 1982) Platform: Atari 2600

About a third of the people I quizzed came up with this title almost instantly, and it's not hard to see why. No matter how you rate it, E.T. was a misbegotten product that deserved to be buried. (And, as things turned out, it was. More on that in a minute.)

How, you may wonder, does someone screw up the one-two punch of the year's most popular movie and the number one video game console? Through a combination of poor planning and unbridled optimism. Warner Communications, then Atari's parent company, sealed the deal to make a video game adaptation of the blockbuster movie in the summer of 1982, aiming to have the cartridge out for the Christmas shopping season. (Remember the TV ad, with E.T. in a Santa outfit? No? You can refresh your memory.) The result was a severely compressed development schedule, giving programmer Howard Scott Warshaw a mere five weeks to pull the game together.

Oh, I wholeheartedly agree with the Atari Pac Man selection. It was so poor compared to the arcade version. I remember all the hype before it came out. It was something like $49.99, which was outrageous then. Very disappointing.

None of the sports games for the 2600 were any good. I also had the Raiders of the Lost Ark game, which kind of blew.

Activision had a few duds, but I loved Pitfall.

Asteroids and Joust.

Funny story - A friend and I were playing Joust at a movie theatre and we were just wooping it up having a great time. We were so entertaining that we had people crowded around the machine feeding us quarters to keep us playing. I think we missed the start of our movie.

The Howard Dean for Iowa Game (2003)

I may get this game just for the hell of it. Maybe it carries some secret message on why they won EVERYTHING on Tuesday.

Are those top ten you LIKE? Because there are several there that have no business on a "worst games" list, IMO.

It was great. It's the only lengthy game that I've ever finished and then turned right around and started again. Actually, I should say it's the first, because I've done the same for other Zelda games since. I've played through Minish Cap and the Oracle games at least three times each. Zelda is terrific.

Dragon Slayer has to be on someone's worst list. For crying out loud, all you were was a box that carried a key or a sword....and that idiotic bat that stole from you....

It's lame by today's standards, but I used to love Yar's Revenge.
