Libertarians Defeated Talent?
Self, Missouri election records | Nov. 8, 2006 | Self

Posted on 11/08/2006 2:10:11 PM PST by rond

Jim Talent's loss wasn't so much a slam-dunk by the Democrats.

Talent WON in 2002 with 49.8 percent of the vote, to Jean Carnahan's 48.7 percent.

Talent LOST in 2006 with 47.4 percent of the vote, to McCaskill's 49.4 percent.

The Dem gains .7 percent; Talent loses 2.4 percent.

A glaring difference: The Libertarian candidate went from 1 percent in 2002 to 2.3 percent in 2006.

Libertarian gains were more pronounced in southwest Missouri's 7th District:

•In Lawrence County, McCaskill pulled 35.2 percent -- exactly as much as Carnahan in 2002. But Talent's share dwindled from 62.2 percent to 59.7 percent. The Libertarian candidate received 1.9 percent in 2002 and 3.9 percent in 2006.

•In Polk County (home to Southwest Baptist University), Talent defeated Carnahan in 2002, 62.4-35.5 percent. This year, Talent was held to under 60 percent -- 58.7-36.5, with the Libertarian share growing from 1.4 to 3.8 percent.

•In Taney County, Talent went from a 64.3-33.9 split in 2002 to a 60.6-34.8 victory in 2006. The Libertarian vote grew to 3.4 percent, from 1.3 percent in 2002.

•In Christian County, Talent lost more than 3 percent of his support (63.6 in 2002, 60.5 in 2006). The Democratic share grew only slightly, from 34.6 to 35.3 percent. But the Libertarian vote more than doubled, from 1.2 to 3.1 percent.

•In Barry County, Talent was held under 60 percent (59.2, from a high of 63.3 percent in 2002). Dems inched up from 34.8 to 35.5 percent. Libertarians increased their share from 1.4 to 3.9 percent.

In all five counties, Democrats didn't grow their share by more than a point.

Damned dogs in the manger Libertarians strike again.

Explain why registered Libertarians owe Republicans their votes. Just kidding, I'm not expecting a coherent reply.

I should have been more clear - my whole post was sarcasm. I hear people constantly bashing libertarians with these fallacious arguments, and it gets on my nerves.

They simply gave an excuse, or refused, or said they were upset with the national GOP.
Call them and thank them.

They do NOT "owe" Republicans a vote at all. OTOH, they should stop claiming to be "Conservatives", when they aren't. They should stop pretending that they belong/fit in here, and they should stop making snarky posts to people who disagree with them.

If that wasn't COHERENT enough for you, than the fault lies within yourself.

The Dem gained .7 percent. Coupled with the Libertarian gain, that accounts for 2 percent of the 2.4 percent drop for Talent.

Okay. There's 1.3 persent that voted Libertarian this time that didn't last time. If you assume that every last one of them switched from voting Republican in the last election, that leaves 1.1 percent of the Republican vote that either stayed home, or voted D, and that 1.3% wouldn't have made up the difference.

Wait a minute...I thought Libertarians only get .0001% of the vote anyway. Not in Missouri. In some counties (see CNN's results page for MO, county by county breakdown) they garnered 4-5%. Libertarians do not "owe" Republicans their votes. If Republicans want to get Libertarian votes, the way to do it is NOT with a candidate like Talent, who gave us the big song and dance at the pharmacy every time we want to buy cold medicine now, as part of the "war on drugs."

Libertarians love losing so much, that they want the whole country to lose, to share in the joy of "losing with principle."

So they've chipped off enough voters to really get our taxes high. These are the guys who wanted the GOP to throw out the religious right.

Dues don't pay for political work. Political work is done by volunteers. Did you volunteer? Did you volunteer to donate to the NRA-ILA, the NRA's political fund? Or, are you a member of the 2nd Amend Task Force, whose members donate at least $120 annually to support the NRA's political activity? Did you volunteer to host a fundraiser for the 2nd Amend supporting candidate. Did you get the post card alert for the election?

I PERSONALLY printed up (AT MY OWN EXPENSE) signs which I then PERSONALLY planted at polling places in my district...during the wind and rain (were you inside on a phone?)

This was done by me of my own accord and AT MY OWN EXPENSE AND TIME, because the NRA DID NOT DO A THING TO HELP TALENT IN MISSOURI.

Now I find out that they are supporting Democrats!?

Screw the NRA, I'm out.

Now, what did you do? Just donate, just man phones?

or we can choose to vote for someone who has a chance to win.

I don't understand why you don't want people to vote for the candidate that represents them.

"I think Libertarians take more away from Democrats than Republicans."

You're right, except in cases they run as a third party and get 10, or more percent of the vote. In that case though, it depends on a popular candidate joining that party to hit back at the Rs. In other cases they're 0.1%er crackpots, accompanied by 1%D voters.
