"Is it possible to send a thank you that one and all can sign?"

I think this is a good idea. I'm sure it would be appreciated by this tireless public servant. Any ideas how to get it done?

Please add your positive comments to this thread.

Okay, before he became a wartime SECDEF he did a good job of rebuilding the military handed to him by the Clintons...he did a good job for Ford in peacetime too! How's that?

That's what we're doing, electronically :) Post an image or a poem if you wish. I'm sure the SecDef will be made aware of this tribute.

Secretary Rumsfield,
How saddened our family is that you are stepping down from this position. It is with tears and grief, that we say goodbye to you . Thank you for standing like a man , a man of integrity, and not afraid to do what is right in war time. You will be hard to be replaced.
May God's Richest Blessing Be yours,
Polly and family

Mr. Rumsfeld will be a hard act to follow. He is proof positive that our nation doesn't know what to do with a straight-shooting guy who will not pander to the press. Thanks from NH, Mr. Rumsfeld!

>>>Positive? Like if he had quit a month ago, the Republicans would have likely held on to the Senate? Is that positive enough for you?<<<

Bush answered that in his news conference 5 minutes ago.

Announcing a change prior to the election would have sent a message to the troops that he was willing to sacrifice the leadership he had chosen for them, and that he had backed strongly for the sake of political expediency.

Bush is a man that will not sacrifice principle for political gain.....I like that. You may feel differently.

Mr. Rumsfeld, I laud your service. You did a lot of us proud and you deserved better than to be a sacrificial lamb for a failed political effort.

I'll be in line to buy your memoirs.

Surely history will eventually assay Rummy as a thorough and conscientious American; it's just at present I feel for him being sacrificed and abandoned after a lifetime of service.

'As I understand it, the job of Secretary of a Department of the Federal Government is mainly an administrative one.'

He is the #2 Man in the Chain of Command behind the President.

'The members of the military execute the war, the President declares it.'

Congress declares war and or authorizes it when they have a nut shortage. The Executive branch is responsible for executing it. The military is an extension of the Executive branch.

Did not England do the same to Churchill when the war was won? Churchill did not prove to be as able a Prime Minister in peacetime as he was a leader during the war. Today, nobody remembers his post-war failings. He is still revered as one of the all-time greats in British history for his war record alone.

Enjoy retirement Rummy. I wouldn't be surprised if you had looked forward to this for a while but stayed on to serve your country and save us from the democrats using an earlier retirement as an opportunity to bash the President and his new appointment prior to the elections.

Mr. Secretary, your skillful and dedicated leadership will be missed. Your fearlessness and sense of humor in the face of opposition has been a source of inspiration to many of us.

And Rummy, there never has been anyone as skillful at handling a hostile MSM. You were beautiful to behold!
