Word For The Day, Monday, November 6, 2006 - inveterate
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | November 6, 2006 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

inveterate \in-VET-uhr-it\, adjective
1. Firmly established by long persistence; deep-rooted; of long standing.
2. Fixed in habit by long persistence; confirmed; habitual.

Example sentence:
I was an inveterate museum-goer from the age of fourteen, when I'd take the trolley to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts after school and wander the halls of Greek antiquities.
-- Jane Alexander, Command Performance

Etymology:
Inveterate is from the past participle of Latin inveterari, "to grow old, to endure," from in- + vetus, veter-, "old." It is related to veteran, "one who is long experienced in some activity or capacity; an old soldier of long service; one who has served in the armed forces." The noun form is inveteracy or inveterateness.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

LOL!!!!!

But what is he going to call all the folks in Maryland who vote for Steele? Will he call them racists because they didn't vote for the white cardboard cutout?

It could be said that John Kerry and John Dean, like Dan Quail, have an inveterate disease. It's called "Foot and Mouth Disease".

Well, inveterate traditionalist that I am, it is breaking my heart to even contemplate leaving the Episcopal Church, but it seems that the church is going to hell in a handbasket.

I am crossing my fingers that the split will come sooner rather than later and the liberal apostacists can have their empty buildings while the real Anglican church flourishes. Bishop Kay should speed the process right along. A for you.

That's why we have to vote, in large numbers. This is no time to sit on one's hands. A for you.

Libs want the U.S. in chains--they'd fetter it
They vote for dems, reflexively--inveterate
Left want U.N control
Of our heart, mind and soul
Righties love our land, seek to better it

Good Morning!

My inveterate tendency to check on messages, and especially the Word for the Day, has my coffee cup tapping its figurative dainty foot and saying "Well?" in that crystalline tone it likes to use.

Patience, my little goblet of refreshingness. My Word!

Helen Thomas confirms she is an inveterate liberal, as if any of us needed that news flash. She gets all tingly in the naughty bits when she sees Jeanne Francoise Querrie wearing his "I'm A Veteran" tie, no matter how tacky it is. She doesn't care that any honorable former soldier hearing Querrie's words quickly became an irate Vet newly offended by the pompous ass and his continuing disdain for those who wear the uniform with honor. It is disgusting to see the left not only tolerate the anti-American and anti-military philosophy of a leftover sixties hippy like this clown, but actually venerate it. When they try to feed you this BS, you should never eat it.

He drives me batty...........and his latest spew about "racists" in Tennessee will be the reason for a Ford defeat.........What about the racism in Maryland in the steele race? The only racism I'm seeing in Maryland in regard to Steele is ocmeing from WHITE DEMOCRATS.........

I can't wait for Wednesday to get here. Once I vote tomorrow morning I am going to hole up in the house with no TV, Radio or phone until after 8pm.

The inveterate reaction of the media to be opposite of whatever stance the Bush administration takes makes me think if Bush said "I want to wear a tutu," that they would come out and lecture Americans on the evil of ballet.

But if W came out against the evils of tutu wearing, all the newscasters would show up dressed that way.

I can just see John Kerry being interviewed by Chris Matthews -- both wearing tutus, of course.

It's worth a try.
