COLORADO SPRINGS, Nov. 3 /Christian Newswire/ -- Focus on the Family founder and Chairman James C. Dobson, Ph.D., issued the following statement today after learning the Rev. Ted Haggard had acknowledged some "indiscretions" involving accusations made against him by a gay prostitute in Denver:
"All of us at Focus on the Family are heartsick over the allegation, not yet confirmed, that Ted has had a private life with a homosexual for several years. We will await the outcome of this story, but the possibility that an illicit relationship has occurred is alarming to us and to millions of others.
"Ted has been my close friend and colleague for many years. He has been used mightily to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Colorado Springs and around the world. He will continue to be my friend, even if the worst allegations prove accurate. Nevertheless, sexual sin, whether homosexual or heterosexual, has serious consequences and we are extremely concerned for Ted, his family and his church.
"We ask that the Focus on the Family constituency and Christians everywhere pray for Ted and his loved ones. Our hearts go out to all of them. Perhaps the allegations are false and the circumstances are not as we have heard. Either way, the situation has grave implications for the Cause of Christ and we ask for the Lord's guidance and blessings in the days ahead."
Lead us not into temptation.
It is past time. Christians need to focus on Jesus Christ, not the celebrity preacher/Christian fad du jour.
Have you seen him on television recently? I caught his show by accident around the end of 2004. He was bald and appeared emaciated when I saw him. Time has not been kind to Jim Bakker.
You are wrong. People are looking to Dobson for some response. In fact, his wb site was so bombarded earlier today that it was down. Dobson has not responded to this situation out of ego.
You ought to check into papal history. If papal tradition counts for anything, you just might find a reason to worry.
I wouldn't classify him as a celebrity preacher. I am from CO and nearby his church. I have certainly heard of his church but never heard of him until yesterday.
The ministry/priesthood will always attract a certain subset who are trying to fight their demons by choosing a life in the church. Unfortunately, they often fail
"Dobson has not responded to this situation out of ego."
I disagree, but that's neither here nor there. Dobson may do as he pleases, as may I.
I agree. Do you have a link for that story?
Who is this Haggard and what is the deal?
I never cared much for Bakker prior to the scandal.
But, I have gained immense respect for him since his release from prison. He seems a changed man.
He confessed all in his book "I Was Wrong" and he makes no excuses now for his behavior 20 years ago.
Why try to reason with an atheist about such matters? He's just relishing the fact that Haggard has fallen, and is wanting to pile on to other well-known Christians like Dobson.
Best to ignor him.

Ahh, your wrong...but your still a good egg!
"It is not about ego, I assure you of that."
Again, I disagree. Dobson is all about ego, in my opinion. But you may take my opinion for whatever you think it is worth.
Yes, Haggard, Dobson, and the rest are quite close. After all, this Haggard was the head of the NAE. He did not come to that without the help of influential friends.
Yes, Dobson needed to make some sort of statement. He really had no choice. It is the nature of the statement that he had control over.
Dobson is a psychologist, not a minister. He just plays a minister on TV, it seems.
His international ministry has its HQ in CO Springs, as does Haggard's.
For this reason, it was appropriate for him to speak up as many of the 30,000,000 evangelicals in the orgranization were probably looking for Dobson's opinion.
I think you're talking ancient history.
Thank you.
