Dr. James Dobson 'Heartsick' Over Haggard Allegations

COLORADO SPRINGS, Nov. 3 /Christian Newswire/ -- Focus on the Family founder and Chairman James C. Dobson, Ph.D., issued the following statement today after learning the Rev. Ted Haggard had acknowledged some "indiscretions" involving accusations made against him by a gay prostitute in Denver:

"All of us at Focus on the Family are heartsick over the allegation, not yet confirmed, that Ted has had a private life with a homosexual for several years. We will await the outcome of this story, but the possibility that an illicit relationship has occurred is alarming to us and to millions of others.

"Ted has been my close friend and colleague for many years. He has been used mightily to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Colorado Springs and around the world. He will continue to be my friend, even if the worst allegations prove accurate. Nevertheless, sexual sin, whether homosexual or heterosexual, has serious consequences and we are extremely concerned for Ted, his family and his church.

"We ask that the Focus on the Family constituency and Christians everywhere pray for Ted and his loved ones. Our hearts go out to all of them. Perhaps the allegations are false and the circumstances are not as we have heard. Either way, the situation has grave implications for the Cause of Christ and we ask for the Lord's guidance and blessings in the days ahead."

Hmm... is Land the same guy quoted today:

"So shut up, Dick" (responding to Dick Armey's take on Dobson, et al). If so, he appears to be more of the same, overwhelmed by the potential of his "movement's" political influence, willing to bury the core principles of his faith in exchange for power and attention.

They have no shame.

There's a TV ad playing in California against Proposition 85 which would inform parents if their under-aged daughter was getting an abortion.

"Step outside your bubble" the condescending ad instructs us, while we hear a father beating his daughter behind some anonymous window.

It's an insane world where our 12-year-old daughters can undergo anesthesia and the surgery of abortion without informing their parents, but that same 12-year-old cannot receive Tylenol in school or ride in a school bus on a field trip without my signature.

Another public cleansing--haven't had one since Jim Bakker and the PTL scandal. I guess Jimmy Swaggart doesn't count? Or Paul Crouch? Or Peter Popoff? Or Pat Robertson? Or Robert Tilton? Or Benny Hinn? Yeah, giving money to these guys is like giving meth to an addict.

And where do I get these 'morals' for raising my child?...from a vacuum?

No...I got them from my blueprint, the Bible...
..and wonderful pastors and teachers, including Dr.James Dobson.

We all need 'tools' to do our jobs.

How do you read fear into this comment? Dobson (and Christians in general) feels compassion for his brothers and sisters. Dobson has worked with Haggard in their virtuous efforts.

yeah, you're probably right. just because haggard has been outed, is no indication that those who have looked the other way have anything to be ashamed of.

In fact, it's probably more accurate that haggard kept his "secret" so well hidden that NO ONE chould have possibly known what he was up to.

You're right, I'm sure.

Papal tradition might count for something, but I do think the Pope has less of chance of doing something stupid because he practices reconciliation weekly. Even the secular agree that confession is a crucial element in breaking the cycle of (addiction/sin.)

I like and respect Dobson, who seems to be the de facto Bishop of America for Evangelicals (and, as such, was wholly appropriate in responding to the scandal.)

I remain disturbed, however, by a Christmas Card sent by Dobson several years ago. My parents, donors to Focus on the Family, were recipients of the card which bore on its cover a portrait of Mr. & Mrs. James Dobson. (Mary? Joseph? Jesus? Elizabeth?)

Thanks for the info, I now understand that this a big deal in the evangelical movement but I think this is vastly over-rated as something that would cause voters to stay home.

What rational person would think the dims are a more righteous , wholesome group and should be rewarded with authority over the rest of us?

Thank you! I appreciate your thoughtful response!

I have taught classes for teachers in the past about using positive affirmations for kids which I believe this world cannot get enough! The book I used was called 'Discipline Without Tears' and it gives you an understanding of why kids misbehave and how to deal with it. It is Not a syrupy liberal book, but it gives you common sense guidelines on what to look for and how to deal with problems using practical solutions.

The bible is full of affirmations! My favorite is found in Isaiah 43:

But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, and He who formed you: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine!

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.

For I am the Lord your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior...

Since You are precious in My sight, You have been honored, And I have loved you; Therefore I will give men for you, And people for your life.

Fear not, for I am with you...

This story was a diversion to get Carry "Stuck Hear N Irak" news off the front page!

They saved the scandalous stuff - not matter if it was the Congressmen or the Christian leaders - for such a time as this just before the election - so we would forget what the Dems are all about:

Dissing the President, the military, and the values voters!

Say, do you like gladiator movies?

So, the fact that Haggard did meth, and had gay sex, even though he is an evangelical leader and preached against that is not a story?

Are you as big a hypocrite as him?

Its a story, it should be aired, just as much as Kerry saying something stupid. The media should not favor one side over the other, even if it does for the left.

What are you talking about?! I never said that!!

I was - ONLY - saying that the Dems have saved a story like this situation in order to get the Republican momentum off the front pages - get people to quit thinking about the picture of the MN reserve troops having that banner mocking Carry and STOP the momentum!! It just won't work! The Dems are fools to think this will stop the spread of the picture of the troops!

I don't support Anyone who does something like that - no matter who he is! He Should be prosecuted as he has confessed to buying meth!

Just read a little better!!
