A GEORGIA court today found a man guilty of sexually mutilating his two-year-old daughter with a pair of scissors, the first proven case of female genital mutilation in the US.
AKhalid Adem, a 31-year-old Ethiopian immigrant, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for aggravated battery and cruelty to children for the 2001 crime, which the mother said she did not discover until two years later when she took her daughter to the doctor.
Adem had faced a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.
Before the sentencing, Fortunate Adem, the mother of the girl who now is seven years old, pleaded for the maximum sentence.
"This was a violation of her rights as a child, her rights as a woman, and most of all her rights as a human being, she will never be the same,'' she said in the courtroom, according to a tape recording broadcast by local radio station WSB.
Equality Now, a Washington-based women's rights group, said Adem's was the first recorded case of female genital mutilation in the United States.
"We hope that this really raises the issue of FGM in the United States, and in Georgia,'' said the group's director Taina Bien-Aime.

I realize this is a side issue, but can someone explain how a mother didn't notice this about her two year old for TWO YEARS?
Perhaps the mother wanted to stay alive?
Toward the end of the 19th and in the early 20th century the practice was actually advertised and performed.

Yes, strangely silent, aren't they? *Cue crickets.* Revolting. These champions of feminism should be swarming the little girl and mother with legal and other aid, should be on CNN decrying this mutiliation and vowing to end it. But I won't hold my breath.

I'm not sure, considering the little girl was only 2 and would have needed supervision for baths and bathroom, how the mother didn't know, but thankfully she acted when she found out. That's a privelege that women in some other countries wouldn't have.

The conclusion I arrive at is this; the origin (originator) of this statement is needs serious help.
I looked into this case the other day. I researched it in a few places and found that usually it is the women of the tribe or family that do this. I have however heard of barbers doing it the USA. heres some links that can make you cry.

(The legs of the little girl are tied together for several weeks until the wound heals; a tiny opening is created by inserting a splinter of wood - to allow urination. Thus virginity - which is considered especially important by Moslem men - can be proven before the bride price is paid to the father) this one made me cry to think of the pain these little girls suffer.

I do find it very odd the mother didn't notice it right away as the child would have been bleeding and suffering. Maybe she was afraid of her husband, I don't know. Whoever did this ought to rot in jail for a very long time.

I don't think I'm in the minority when I say that I don't want such practices exported to the United States.
The modern mind (the one not living in 700AD) would be repulsed by such behavior, as it should be.
It's called "Sharia", and it is a theocratic government idea 180 degrees opposed to our ideals of government which has been formed by our founders as a Constitutional Republic.
If nothing else, she should have noticed that the little girl was bleeding!
