Smoking - I'm Livid !
10/26/2006 | stylin19a

Posted on 10/26/2006 11:37:16 AM PDT by stylin19a

I am 2 hours post-op surgery.

The last words I heard before going under anesthesia were: "Quit Smoking"..from the anestheseologist.

The first words I heard coming out of the anesthesia, again by the anestheseologist, were "QUIT SMOKING".

Please...no pros\cons of smoking. Perhaps I'm too close to the surgery but, smoking now dries out my mouth, taste absolutely rotten and gives me a headache. I now have very little desire to smoke.

Please, no comments about no desire.

I don't think what the anestheseologist did is right. It's not his call to get me to quit smoking, it's mine...if and when I'm ready.

Is what he did legal ?

"That's an old picture, from before the gastric surgery. This is what he looks like"

Yeah, they had to use re-bar for his stomach stapling, and the picture you posted was post-op, and AFTER he started smoking again.

LOL

should I start approaching people on the street to tell them to quit?

Go right ahead.

I smoke. It's not like I'm coming at this from a rabid anti-smoker position. But who cares if a doctor says quit smoking?????

that's a stretch....do you approve of using a date rape drug to get laid ?

You are comparing a doctor's advice to quit smoking to someone using a date rape drug???

Now that is a stretch!

I am in for hand surgery
I talked with the anesth. pre-op.
he asked if i smoked. i said yes.
He said i should quit.
I said nothing.
i get into the surgery room,he starts the anesth drip, i start fading and i the last thing i hear is "Quit smoking"

3 hours later, I'm starting to be brought out of the anesth. first words i hear are "Quit smoking".

so which part of any of that is related to my hand surgery ?

If you were a faggot, going into surgery, I'm sure there would be hell to pay if the attending medical person suggested "do women", or words to that effect.

Yeah, because it's stupid advice, that's why. A suggestion for some level of celibacy would at least make sense. Smoking, not gay sex, is the single voluntary habit that causes the most unnecessary disease and suffering in the USA. Smoking creates relative risk increases only seen in extreme occupational exposures (i.e. asbestos). Quitting or cutting down is a good idea.

I believe that may have been the anesthesiologist talking to the surgeon using your physical condition as evidence.

Surgeons are notorious for smoking out back of the hospital (with the Nurse's Aides) in their scrubs between operations. Sometimes they have to stay awake for 36 hours at a stretch & the nicotine really helps. Of course, THEY have a prescription...

So that's okay...

VERDICT - Case Dismissed...

What about a smoking faggot?

There should be laws to prevent that right?????

I think that to win a suit one would have to prove damages and neglegence.

Solid medical advice, no matter how unwanted, is not negligent.

Losing the desire for an unhealthy habit is not damaging.

This guy deserves all the ridicule and derision he can get now so that he doesn't truly embarrass himself if he sues and when his lawsuit makes national news.

I would expect my doctor to tell me, my personal physician. An anesthesiologist is someone you are not likely to have any kind of relationship with and should exercise some discretion.

OK, now it makes a bit more sense.

From an anesthetists point of view: probably a lot, no matter what type of surgery it is.

You got some good medical advice. I hope you take it. As to immoral and/or illegal - I think that's a stretch.
