"I smoke. It's not like I'm coming at this from a rabid anti-smoker position. But who cares if a doctor says quit smoking?????"
It's a bit different when you're being put under anesthesia. The Dr.'s job at this point is to make you feel as comfortable and as safe as possible. Any agitation before being put under anesthesia and undergoing surgery could put the body under additional stress, which could negatively affect the state of the body during surgery. Suggesting something that could potentially stress the patient is very wrong in this situation.

"What the person did was not only legal, but ethical, and completely within his rights and DUTIES of his profession."
No, it is definitely not ethical...Any "advice" that could potentially stress the body/mind before being put under anesthesia and undergoing surgery is certainly not good.

"You hide behind freedoms that were earned by people who likely gave up their lives, yet you throw all that out the window so easily when the topic is one that you disapprove of."
I'm very surprised to see that so many people couldn't give a damn about the lives that were lost fighting for the freedom that they now take granted. It's positively sickening and very disheartening.

"Conservatism has a natural affinity for authoritarianism. As a conservative, one must realize this and balance it with some small "L" libertine beliefs, or it can easily get out of control, which it has on a few occasions in the past few years of republican domination in the House and perhaps to a lesser degree in the Senate. But I see it more in the local governance."
I thought that "Conservatives" were supposed to be for conserving freedom (and that means freedom for everyone), and the core principals that America was built upon. It seems that many don't have those beliefs.
