Smoking - I'm Livid !
10/26/2006 | stylin19a

Posted on 10/26/2006 11:37:16 AM PDT by stylin19a

I am 2 hours post-op surgery.

The last words I heard before going under anesthesia were: "Quit Smoking"..from the anestheseologist.

The first words I heard coming out of the anesthesia, again by the anestheseologist, were "QUIT SMOKING".

Please...no pros\cons of smoking. Perhaps I'm too close to the surgery but, smoking now dries out my mouth, taste absolutely rotten and gives me a headache. I now have very little desire to smoke.

Please, no comments about no desire.

I don't think what the anestheseologist did is right. It's not his call to get me to quit smoking, it's mine...if and when I'm ready.

Is what he did legal ?

I'm going out on a limb here, and I have experience smoking, but are you one of those people that ABSOLUTELY REEKS of smoke? Smoking in an enclosed car and smelling like you bathed in long cut Copenhagen?

Maybe that was why they kept commenting.

Just a guess.

"I talked with the anesth. pre-op.
he asked if i smoked. i said yes.
He said i should quit."

He was still awake and not yet under when this was said to him... that doesnt constitute sh!t.
Was it inproper that when he came to, he was told to quit smoking...maybe, but big deal.

It just sounds like a case of "crappy bedside manner" to me. Many of the specialists don't really interact with patients that much and thus are not so aware of trying not to hurt patients' feelings (while still getting across needed information).

Forget about the lawsuit. But if you are still angry in a day or two, find the address of the hospital's Patient Relations department (it will be called something like that) and write a letter complaining about the anesthesiologist's bedside manner at a vulnerable time for you. They'll at least give him grief over it. You might even get a written apology.

It was probably legal, but not professional.

The anesthesiologist was just being a busy-body.

A self-righteous busybody ...

But voting Democrat will bring about sensible, universal medical care. What could be more sound than that? You do care about patients getting sound medical advice, don't you? You should write to that doctor and tell him to say "Vote Democrat" next time, since it's obviously sound medical advice. Or better yet: "Hillary loves you". Now that's some sound medical advice!

Would you be as offended if he told you to eat right, get some exercise and don't step in front of speeding trains?

Hey, whatever works. :) Fortunately, I can't imagine what that would be like - either being big like that, OR wanting to smoke.

Probably it's best to assume he just wanted to give you some good advice for the future. Of course, he has not been hired to give you any advice at all; he has been hired to do his job, period. That you are a smoker may make his job a little bit more difficult, but such is the nature of his business. Some folks really want to suggest good things to others, but quite a few like to assert their believed superiority, while hiding behind the mask of the "do-gooder." If that fellow falls into the first group, give some thought to what he said; if he falls into the second group, smack him! :)

Go back and read the original post...
The last words I heard before going under anesthesia were: "Quit Smoking"..from the anestheseologist.

The first words I heard coming out of the anesthesia, again by the anestheseologist, were "QUIT SMOKING".
He was not fully conscious in either case. The doctor's actions were unethical. (Though I often wonder how concerned the average smokegnatzi is about ethics.)

This is gonna be a good thread tater.

But seriously, 2 hours or less out of surgery and you smoked a cig? That should tell you a lot, my friend.

Now I'll sit back and read the jokes. Good luck on your recovery and here's hoping you get the love of cigs back!!
