I am 2 hours post-op surgery.
The last words I heard before going under anesthesia were: "Quit Smoking"..from the anestheseologist.
The first words I heard coming out of the anesthesia, again by the anestheseologist, were "QUIT SMOKING".
Please...no pros\cons of smoking. Perhaps I'm too close to the surgery but, smoking now dries out my mouth, taste absolutely rotten and gives me a headache. I now have very little desire to smoke.
Please, no comments about no desire.
I don't think what the anestheseologist did is right. It's not his call to get me to quit smoking, it's mine...if and when I'm ready.
Is what he did legal ?
And considering the effects of the drugs, how do we know that it was actually even said? Or said to the patient, and not to someone else in the room?
The whole thing is just silly.
Well, Im amazed, youre 2 hours post-op for hand surgery.. what the hell are you using to type right now?

The anesthesiologist is concerned with your airway, he didn't operate on you wrist. As the individual responsible for airways, and an expert, he is entitled to issue sound advice. You are entitled to ignore it.
right hand...1 finger
What duty did the doctor breech?
What is your loss?
What are your specific damages?
What do you want to make you 'whole' again?
thanks for all you responses.
Every time I go to the doctor, whether for a skin rash, a flu shot or an ingrown toenail, the guy tells me to lose weight. I know I need to lose weight. I don't want to hear it. I don't particularly appreciate it. But he's right, and it's good advice. He's not following me home and checking my pantry. He's not spying to see if I stop at Wendy's for a Frosty on the way home. He's not in anyway infringing on my freedom to be stupid when it comes to my health. He's giving his honest opinion, and I'm big enough to take it.
There is no guaranteed freedom to not be offended -- even before surgery. Even under the influence of medication. The guy didn't suggest he jump off a bridge, leave his wife or convert to Scientology. He told him to quit smoking -- perfectly sound advice. And the guy is free to light up as he exits the hospital and smoke himself into lung cancer in the privacy of his own home. God bless America.
Here's some light reading for you, stylin19a. Get well soon. That's a suggestion. I don't want to coerce you or anything.
What kind of single finger surgey requires you to be put out?
Dang. I had hand surgery as a child with just a local.
If I were you I'd spend my anger on the fact that they charged you for the full anesthetic when you coulda just had a local.
You're welcome.
agh.......read the post i was responding to
Gonna be hard to prove, isn't it?
And the doc probably isn't a hospital employee, so you probably won't be able to chase the hospital's deep pockets.
"What kind of single finger surgey requires you to be put out?"
Im guessing its the middle finger.. must have used it too often and had extensive damage. ;o)

All in all...youre a good sport.
Good luck to ya.

I SWEAR that I heard someone whisper "Type without reading....type without reading..."
And so I did.
LOL...ouch!
It is silly and I'm not suggesting any action should be taken. I just think he over stepped the bounds. The last thing someone undergoing surgery needs is some smartass making unnecessary comments as he puts them under.
"Quit Smoking" is.
