Not sure about your current cable company but currently have have Direct TV and its pretty dang good.. better then cable i'd have to say(seriously and not just saying that because I have it) less outages(yes when it rains hard you will lose your signal for a few minutes.. but thats it..) with cable you lose your signal anyhow and sometimes for hours! so... thats a tossup.. the reception on Direct TV is just as good as cable(if not better, our lower cable station were very weak and came in poor with DTV they are all good) its looks good, not snow and channels look strong.
I get the NFL Sunday Ticket thats why got rid of Cable in the first place.

I'll bet that is an introductory price for a limited time. Check the fine print.

Save the money, switch. Invest the balance...you'll be glad you did!

It might be an introductory price, but the package price is $19.99, of course, subject to price increases in the future, and there will be those.

I bought my DirectTV system at Circuit City. I don't recall having a lease fee on the bill......I think I'm going to look again.

Is Satellite TV Worth it?

Without a doubt, YES!
Now granted, I had Comcast Cable (the worst cable company in my opinion) and my basic cable (no pay movie channels, no pay sports channels etc.etc.) was $48.95 per month and that was with 6 rate hikes within the past 3 years. Yep, we were averaging a rate hike every 6 months. In those last 3 years, my cable bill went from $35.95 to $48.95 per month! Not to mention all the calls and junk mail to get me to switch to digital cable.

Anyway, I have had Dish Network for a year now and will NEVER go back to cable. I have the (2 receivers controlling 4 TVs) system. One receiver has DVR capabilities and it's gotten to the point that we hardly ever watch "live TV" anymore. Its just so much easier to record everything and watch it when its convenient for us. Not to mention the ability to zip through the commercials.
Our Dish Network bill is $51.85 a month. That breaks down to $39.95 for 120 satellite channels, $5.95 for 6 local channels and $5.95 for DVR capabilities on one box. We avoid having to pay the $4.95 per box connect fee by having each box connected to the phone line.

That price is good for 18 months so I can live with this for that amount of time.

My personal preference is DirecTV, but DISH is good too, and DISH has a better deal now anyway. At least the mailers I got were for $19.95 (+$5 for locals) for 10 months.

Go for it! Cable is overpriced, and overrated!

Uh.. they can de-activate that box for the months they are away, unless they are leasing the receiver.

Yep.

Cox has me on hold for what seems like a long time because I said I wanted to cancel my cable. For anything else I have ever called on, they are available asap but not for cancellations!!

I first went to DISH when I ditched cable. Went to DirecTV after a year of DISH. But when I went to the cable company to cancel and return equipment, I told the receptionist I was going to DISH, and she told me I would love it, because she had it too! LOL

I have a feeling a lot of people got DirecTV because of the football package. I think it's ridiculous they are the only one who can offer it, but I know a lot of people who didn't even consider DISH because they can't offer it.

I think the new DISH boxes let you lock out any station you want to, IIRC.

What area are you in?

If you're in a smaller TV market satellite doesn't usually deliver the same variety of local network affiliates that cable does. Mainly because of both the requirements of "must-carry" within your television market as well as the logistics of getting the local signal up on the satellite.

Why did the government have to mandate it? I'd think demand alone should have made that a reality.

I think if you purchase the box outright you can avoid it.

I agree, DTV should have a monopoly on NFL and stuff like like that just like siruis or XM should have a monopoly over nfl MLB or NASCAR... they should just have to pay a base royalty and they they can air the content...

ex. XM and Sirius pays X amount of dollars for NFL and MLB then they can air those games..

I actually enjoy some TV, although I share the feelings of most Freepers that 90% of it is crap.

All that aside, I wish cable and satellite providers would let you do an "a-la carte" package. Pay individually only for the stations you want to recieve.
