Female genital mutilation in Atlanta

It's not "unthinkable" in Khalid Adem's culture, and since it is justified by some Islamic religious authorities, you should expect to see more stories like this in the U.S. in the future. "Dad stands trial over daughter's mutilation," by Lateef Mungin in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, with thanks to Glenn:

A father stands accused of the unthinkable: brutally cutting his daughter's genitals. The girl was only 2.

Monday, activists from all over the world will be focused on a Gwinnett County courtroom as Khalid Adem, accused of cruelty to a child and aggravated battery for allegedly circumcising his daughter, goes on trial.

Adem, 30, was charged with aggravated battery and cruelty to children more than three years ago and, if convicted, could face 40 years in prison. He was born in Ethiopia, where circumcision is a common procedure for young girls.

Adem's trial may be a landmark case for health and human rights activists fighting against the African custom they call genital mutilation. But for those close to the victim, this trial is about vindication and healing for a little girl who was forced to endure unbearable pain.

"When I saw that child I saw myself. I could see the pain in her eyes," said Soraya Mire, a filmmaker and activist who was circumcised when she was 13 in Somalia. Mire is known for her 1994 documentary "Fire Eyes" in which she chronicled her struggles after having the procedure.

Mire, who now lives in Los Angeles, was asked by Gwinnett authorities to counsel the victim in 2003 when it was discovered that she had been circumcised.

"She hugged me, and I just burst into tears," Mire said. "Since that day, I've been obsessed with finding out who did this to that child."

Police say Adem circumcised his daughter with scissors in his Duluth apartment, while someone else held the girl's legs.

Authorities said the circumcision occurred sometime in 2001 but the mother didn't discover it until two years later. The mother told police she learned about it while arguing with Adem about female circumcision. The mother told police that she told Adem she didn't want that to happen to their daughter, but Adem implied the circumcision had already occurred.

The mother went to a doctor who confirmed that the girl had been circumcised. The girl then told Gwinnett authorities that her father had done it. He was arrested in March 2003.

Go to the link and scroll down and read the comments. There have to be some liberals in there somewhere but it'll be hard to tell which ones they are.

There's an article called *Silent No More* about a Somali model who told her story about this barbaric procedure that was done to her as a 6 year old. It was in Reader's Digest at least 3 years ago, ut I don't recall exactly.

I was sick for weeks after reading this and realizing what these poor, poor babies went through. How can women defend this religion and stick to the practice?

Absolutely unthinkable.

The purpose of this brutal, barbaric practice is to render the female insensitive to sexual stimulation and orgasm. The procedure is also preformed in Egypt and other parts of the Muslim world. The stated intent is to lessen the temptation of adultery or at least to remove any pleasure from an illicit affair. This sadistic custom speaks to the medieval mindset of much of the Islamic world where women are chatal.

The ACLU will probably charge that the baby should have been aborted in the first place, and that it was cruel and unusual punishment to even let the baby be born ....

/dark sarcasm off

Oh yeah, this mindset dovetails very nicely with the quest of finding 72 virgins every time one blows themselves up, ehhh ?

It is done so that the female cannot get any pleasure from the sexual act. It is supposed to 'prevent' adultery.

It's frigging barbaric, just like most of the quaint 'customs' practiced by the adherents to that 'religion' preached by that syphilitic pedophile mohamet (may rivers of p*** be upon him).

The capacity of human beings to do evil in the name of religious or tribal beliefs is virtually unlimited.

True, but the real test is whether society is going to somehow amelioriate its disapproval because the perpetrator claimed some religious exemption. The civilized world ought to examine practices such as this which are barbaric and dangerous, clearly define them as illegal in their jurisdictions, educate immigrants, and then zealously prosecute those who defy them with jail and deportation, and loss of the child/wife/husband who was abused by the practice.

If we let it happen here, we will be complicit in all the abuses which follow. No one forced these people to come here and if they come, they should understand that their practices which qualify as abusive under our law are not protected merely because they are religious practices.

Somalians do this as well. Many I know send their females off to Africa - usually Kenya - where it is done and then bring them back here.

One of my students showed up with a black eye and when I confronted her to tell me how it happened she finally told me that her husband was demanding (and she refusing causing the injury) that they send their daughter to Canada to have it done because in the states they could get in trouble.

Truth is that most females go along...a few out of fear perhaps
