Sweetest Day Weekend
Hello, I'm Nowhere Man, host for this weekend's Singles Freeper Thread. This weekend will feature "Sweetest Day." I figure I would use this opportunity for us to talk about our first love, our sweetest love, or whatever is appropriate. As you can see, I'm ready to taxi and takeoff, so as I shove the throttles forward and get the turboprops running, we are ready to go! |
Many of us here, although single, have successfully found another to share their lives with with the hopes of making it a lifelong commitment. Even in today's turbulent world, it is quite possible. However, there are many of us who have not had the experience or much experience (including yours truly) on getting to this goal. I figure, I would devote this thread to "Sweetest Day" along with stories of how one has met their sweetest, a favorite story with their sweetests or perhaps ideas on how to go about getting their sweetests. As Ross Perot said, "I'm all ears," and I know I'm not the only one. One thing though, no sour grapes or "wizzing" in the pool here, at least keep it to the minimum. I'd like to keep the horror stories down, maybe we can do that another time, but I want to reinforce positive ideas, not negative ones. |

Good luck with the attorney. Talking with them often helps know what direction to go.. Let us know if you need character witnesses.. (we all KNOW you are a character!)

agree on the name selection. A few times I picked a "quick" name that was cute/nice but ended up not really being appropriate.
Some cultures don't even name thier children for days, weeks or months. I read about one that legally called them Son4 Jones.. and the "name" would come about as you suggested & would be the one they were called, although for the "paperwork" they were Son4 etc.

Thanks for kitty pix Sky & Phil.. handsome devils!
Snugs I love the term marmalade for them. We call them tigers or tabbies. These would be red tabbies/tigers.. there can be grey, brown or calico tabbies/tigers.

Some areas do not celebrate Sweetest Day. I think it is getting more wide spread & It has been around for a LONG time. My parents were engaged Sweetest Day in 1939 & married the following Sweetest Day. My cousin was also married Sweetest Day 30 years ago.
I think it was more popular initially in parts of the midwest
Let's see what I can find on Google

Origins and Facts About Sweetest Day
Observed the 3rd Saturday in the month of October, Sweetest Day observance originated in Cleveland in 1922. Herbert Birch Kingston, a philanthropist and candy company employee wanted to bring happiness into the lives of orphans, shut-ins and others who were forgotten. With the help of friends, he began to distribute candy and small gifts to the underprivileged. On the first Sweetest Day, movie star Ann Pennington presented 2,200 Cleveland newspaper boys with boxes of candy to express gratitude for their service to the public.
Another popular movie star, Theda Bara, distributed 10,000 boxes of candy to people in Cleveland hospitals and also gave candy to all who came to watch her film in a local theater.
Primarily a regional observance celebrated in the Great Lakes region and the Northeast, Sweetest Day is gradually spreading to other areas of the country. People tend to take the Sweetest Day tradition with them when they move. Ohio is the top state for Sweetest Day sales, followed by Michigan and Illinois. Texas, California and Florida are among the top 10 states in sales.
Over the years, Sweetest Day has evolved into a time to express romantic love and also to show appreciation to friends.

I like the way you did the Cheney grouping.. and yes Lynn & dick Cheney are great roll models for us all.
I am glad you still have Phil in your life. When you end a significant relationship it speaks volumes for the integrity & character of the couple to remain close friends.
I am grateful that is the case with My friend John (the gent with the golden retriever & the dingo). He is the one I called when Oliver got deathly sick. John took us both to the emergency vet, was with me thru it all, payed the expensive vet bill & got me thru the HELLISH time of grief.
when I came home from my trip in the "wee hours" I had a box of candy & card in my mailbox from my friend Dick (the one I went to the Bently /Rolls party with last Sunday.

well I feel out of it (nothing new).. I have never even HEARD of crystal city, yet alone been to it. I have been to DC probably 20 times..........I do tend to hit the same things over & over. Have yet to got to capital or white house but get to Smithsonian, outdoor monuments, Arlington, etc over & over & over..

good.. thanks. Is it your home of origin? How did you find or become interested in Free Republic? are you a political/history buff? Your country surely has had it's share of trials over the years.
I have never been to Europe & so many countries I would like to visit. I think the first grouping would be Ireland, Scotland & England.. and enough time in each to get a bit acquainted. These three country tours in 5 days just give a quick overview & are pretty sorry in my opinion. Better than nothing of course, but I like to really dig into an area & not just the big attractions, but the back country

It's my home of origin, too.
I found FR by browsing the 'net.... I joined up because I was pissed off at some of the things happening here - like the EU, or Sinn Fein/IRA.
I wouldn't call myself a history/politics buff - but I do take a major interest in such things! :)
I think you need more than 5 days to get an overview of these islands! ;)

I would like maybe a week in each.. 21+ days total.
Sinn Fein has been scary to me even over here!
There was a good movie a few years back on the Irish IRA terrorists, ..set in US..Harrison Ford/Brad Pitt..The Devil's Own. Did you see it? about 10 years or so ago

I didn't see The Devil's Own... but I believe it to be an IRA apologist film - it peddles the normal propaganda about how brutal the British are and how IRA terrorists are just idealistic you men... bla bla bla.
I prefer Patriot Games - shows the IRA in a more accurate light! ;)

Done!
READ: John 19:25-30
When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" John 19:30 So many of our hopes and dreams remain unfulfilled. Composer Franz Schubert departed this world leaving behind his "Unfinished Symphony." Similarly, prolific author Charles Dickens was unable to fully develop the plot of his novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
We too undoubtedly have aspirations that we will be unable to fulfill. But what a blessing to know that the work of our redemption was totally and perfectly accomplished by Jesus on the cross.
The last words of Jesus, "It is finished," are actually a single word in the original language (John 19:30). But that word holds oceans of meaning. What Jesus gasped was "Completed!" or "Ended!" That cry from the cross announced that not only had His suffering come to an end but also His redemptive work was eternally accomplished. All that He had come to achieve in His human life was finished. Done!
We can do nothing to add to His sacrifice. Christ's self-giving death was all-sufficient. We stretch out the empty hand of faith, and God in grace puts into it the gift of eternal life.
Have you stretched out your hand of faith to receive this gift? Vernon C Grounds
"It is finished," Jesus cried,
Then on Calvary's cross He died;
Christ the Lord atonement made,
And sin's debt was fully paid. Hess
Christ's sacrifice was what God desired and what our sin required.
