I hate to tell them but when I was a youngster buying acid, I made sure to keep plenty of beer money handy because I knew I would be drinking to take the edge off.

Being old enough to remember LSD pushed as a panacea, and with experience to the contrary, an emphatic Not this (bleep) again!

Hmmm, anyone ever tried not drinking as a "cure".
Perhaps much clinical study is neccesary before such radical methods are tried.

Yeah, right. Forget Tradition 10, and all that...
The article does mention that 'one of the co-founders' (Bill Wilson) experimented with LSD. This is documented, 'twas in the 50's. His hope was that its use would lead others to a 'spiritual experience such as he (and many of us) had, usually prior to Step 1. It didn't work, and his experimentation was very short-lived.
According to Dyck, even Alcoholics Anonymous endorses the LSD research.

LSD suggested as cure for alcoholism
Sheesh. I suggest a .357 round as an effective cure for Liberalism. That don't mean it makes sense.

trading one problem for another. wow. what a recovery.

There is a whole history of this thinking that originated in some of the writings of Bill Wilson regarding Alcoholism. It didn't go anywhere for the obvious reasons. But I can only imagine how much more interesting AA meetings would get with all the trippin'. One problem: people would be so high they wouldn't make it to the meetings, nor to much of the users' life as well. Small details left out.
