(10/16/06) - Imagine this.

You are hooked on alcohol and you want help getting off the booze.

You go to your doctor, and he or she says, "Drop some acid."

That's right. LSD, the infamous drug of choice for many hippies in the 1960s and '70s.

Lysergic acid diethylamide, the drug that caused hallucinations or "tripping," was, of course, outlawed, giving it immeasurable street cred in its time, before fading away as flower-painted bodies grew into gray-flannel suits.

So, in the 21st century, why would a respected medical doctor even consider prescribing LSD as a wonder drug to help cure alcoholism?

I went from a case or more a day beer drinker to zero alcohol overnight based on will power alone. I just made the decision to quit and toughed it out on my own.

Every drug and alcohol counselor I ever talked to said that I needed professional help because I would never quit. It's been several years since my last drink.

You missed out, there's nothing like driving at night with a full moon and no headlights on in a blizzard on acid!

This is like shooting yourself in the head to cure a broken leg.

LOL! Glad to have you back around! I met Mrs. (yes that) Ivan a few days ago on another thread, glad to see her posting here too...

And all without leaving your living room?

About the same here, but I'll be damned if I remember correctly. I would bet that LSD would be a good treatment for a lot of psychological problems, but I'm not sure alcoholism is among them. Less dangerous than a lot of stuff that they feed preteens nowadays (to say nothing of what the kids get from their parents' medicine cabinets).

The last acid was in Boston .. early 1970something ... VERY freaky (after about 4 years of a steady diet) ... turned myself into Mass. General ... long story short ... I was on a gurney, they hit me with thorazine and I watched utter madness calm into sanity right before my very eyes.

I never did hallucinagens again.

Hell no! After three or four hours, you had to go out and do something.

BTW- do you guys remember in Dr Bob and The Oldtimers ( I think- but it might have been a different book) that Bill W experimented with lsd- he thought it might help his chronic depression. It didn't work. (duuhhh;)
