UNIONTOWN, Pa. -- A youth league baseball coach convicted of getting one of his players to injure a teammate was sentenced to one to six years in prison today.
Fayette County Judge Ralph Warman said the actions by Mark Downs Jr., of Dunbar, in June 2005 were "outrageous" and "extremely reprehensible" because he was coaching a league of children 7 to 9 years old.
Testimony indicated Mr. Downs promised $25 to one of his best players if he hurled a ball at Harry Bowers Jr., 11, an autistic and mildly retarded teammate, presumably to keep him from playing in a game.
A jury convicted Mr. Downs last month of corruption of minors and conspiracy to commit simple assault.
Judge Warman sentenced him to six months to three years on each count

Thanks for the fine insightful post.
I am around autism just about every day.
Some people are just so ignorant that they refuse to understand that autistic children can feel hurt and pain just like any normal child.
People better get used to autism as it is on the rise and no one really knows why the major increase in stats.

You would have been balling in your mothers arms as she stopped your nosebleed. Besides he was a second baseman not a pitcher.
But should my couch have been charged for telling me to run him over if he stood in the baseline?

Don't worry, since G2W wants to make excuses for Mr. Downs, it figures that G2W would equate two grown men with all their faculties going at it, with a grown man intentionally trying to injure an AUTISTIC child.
BTW JUST for fun....

That's not the case here.
He wasn't on your team 1
Two chances are he was NOT mentally retarded
THREE you weren't intentionally trying to injure him, just trying to break up the play. At least I hope that's what you were trying to do.
Finally, I never had a nosebleed until high school when I broke my nose in a wrestling match. Trust me you wouldn't have done CRAP.

No, take a deep breath. You're overreacting.
Coming from someone who is taking up for a scumbag who injured a child....
No I'm taking up for reality. And if he injured a child(and since there is no reporting in this sympathetic story I bet the kid is just bruised), why is this jerk being treated worse than a murder?

No thanks, but I'd love to know why you think some Bad News Bear jerk needs more time in prison thank a murder?

Here's reality for you, the guy is going to jail for up to 6 years. Doesn't reality SUCK???

Injuring a child is on PAR WITH murder in my book. And considering that bruises sometimes keep grown MEN out of sporting contests, your example isn't exactly the best.

Because murderers should be put to death within 2 years of conviction.

I really don't know what to tell you. I believe if I killed someone in Baltimore, I wouldn't get six years.
