Walther PPK would be a good choice for a lady. Small enough to conceal in a purse, but large enough in caliber (.380 auto) to ruin someone's day. Also, not much kick.
Personally, I carry a Springfield M1911A1 Milspec .45 ACP. But I firmly believe in pounding tacks with sledgehammers.

That's what my wife uses. She is quite fond of it but it is a tad small for me.
