AUSTIN, Texas -- Bevo XIII, the winningest and longest-serving mascot in University of Texas history, died Monday, Oct. 9 at the age of 22. He died less than 48 hours after the Longhorns defeated the Oklahoma Sooners, 28-10, in the 2006 edition of the Red River Rivalry.
Originally named Sunrise Express, Bevo XIII was born in February 1984 and became the UT mascot in 1988, serving for 16 years. A national grand champion steer before he was four years old, he was loaned to The University by John and Betty Baker, owners of Sunrise Ranch in Liberty Hill, Texas.
His career as Bevo carried him to both coasts and to both the 2000 and 2004 inaugurations of President George W. Bush.
