HALF MOON BAY -- Twelve-year-old Amanda Zunino of Los Altos fed her giant pumpkin "a lot of love and a lot of manure," but her jumbo squash still fell 32 pounds short of clinching the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off today.
Pumpkin-growing veteran Joel Holland of Washington state, who entered a gourd weighing 1,223 pounds, won the contest for the third straight year.
Holland won $6,115 -- or $5 per pound -- for his hefty pumpkin.
His pumpkin was 6 pounds short of the Half Moon Bay record that he set himself in 2004 and maintained in 2005 (each of his pumpkins weighed 1,229 pounds).

Did you enter this year? :)
I can personally attest to Holland's pumpkin growing expertise from this years Puyallup Fair. He don't play around.
guess that makes him the pumpkin king
This festival is actually a lot of fun. If you have kids and live in the greater Bay Area, this is a must do! Your kids will have such a great time and you probably will too (once you get a parking space). Half Moon Bay is a very charming little town on the Coast, just south of San Francisco.
Maybe they would have shown more interest in the pumpkin if they'd been allowed to sit on top of it for the picture.
LOL...my little one almost got up there. The pumpkin judges watch those like hawks
