New York's CBGB's closing after 33 years

CBGB owner Hilly Kristal sits at his club during an interview Sept. 26, 2006, in New York. After Oct. 15, the legendary club that has hosted acts such as Patti Smith, the Talking Heads, the Ramones, and Blondie will close its doors for good, ending a 33-year run as punk rocks seminal music venue.

NEW YORK --Legs McNeil remembers the night back in 1975 when he walked into the dingy storefront club perched in the even dingier Bowery neighborhood. The band onstage, four guys in leather jackets and torn jeans, was the Ramones. McNeil sat at a nearby table, watching their set with Lou Reed.

"Every night was memorable, except I don't remember 'em," said a laughing McNeil, co-author of the punk rock history "Please Kill Me."

After Sunday, memories are all that will remain when the cramped club with its capacity of barely 300 people goes out of business after 33 years. Although its boom years are long gone, CBGB's remained a Manhattan music scene fixture: part museum, part barroom, home to more than a few rock and roll ghosts.

The club didn't exit without a fight. An assortment of high-profile backers, including E Street Band guitarist Little Steven Van Zandt, battled to keep the legendary club open. But in the end, it was a simple landlord-tenant dispute -- and owner Hilly Kristal saw the handwriting on the club's dank walls.

2006 remastered Eno/Byrne "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts."

On of my all time favorites Jezebel (come out)! Bought way back when it was first put to CD. Also love Eno's Green World with the song "King's Lead Hat" which is an anagram of Talking Heads as a tribute.

Florida had such a weird underground punk scene back then, mostly transplants from the bigger scenes. I always felt a little like Luke Skywalker back then when I'd meet the "authentic punks", grilling them for every morsel of info. "YOU SAW THE SEX PISTOLS! TELL ME! TELL ME! I'm stuck here in Florida until the next harvest..."

Sigh... It was hard growing up in the sticks, but we had our moments. Lots o' homegrown freaks down here, for sure.

"THE CURE on their first US tour ; you know , when they were " underground ""

Down here in DC, saw The Police several times, but first at the Atlantis Club downtown, then again at (????? Rathskeller) a beer joint in College Park, both times before they became famous but were "punk rockers" wearing black leather jackets and doing Roxanne.

I don't think Art Bell's wife assumed room temperature (RIP) before he hooked up with a ~20ish Fillipino,
and married her.

He moved to the Phillipines.

According to the post (referencing his Saturday broadcast), she's pregnant, and they might be moving back.

With Art's "global warming" schtick, I couldn't fathom why he'd move to islands subject to volcanoes,
earthquakes, tsunamis, and "rising oceans" levels in the first place.

Throw in the TROP terrorists too.

Before and after Science

King's Lead Hat

Yes, great album.

We're dangerously close to discussing Brian Ferry, Phil Man, and Roxy Music :)

We chased Talking Heads from Boston to Long Island to Philly to DC for one of their tours (the Big Suit, have forgotten which year, but the one that produced the concert film). So we caught 5 or 6 shows in a row, which was pretty good.

Anyone who's a TH fan should check David Byrne's site, which he actively maintains at www.davidbyrne.com (don't pay too much attention to his blog, he's a run-of-the-mill NYC artiste, to wit, a leftie).

I'm aware of his extreme downside. About 8 years ago he was in one of the world's foremost art magazines. Interesting interview. Wish I could remember it's name, it was my mother's subscription

But he has lots of good stuff to sell and some freebies. I'm salivating over "The Brick" which is a boxed set of all 8 studio albums, and the 2006 remastered Eno/Byrne "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts."

"Bush of Ghosts", by Byrne-Eno, had few if any vocals. It was a warm up for "Once in Lifetime". Which was their peak and their best. Though the next album with "Burning Down the House" sold tons more. That record played everywhere one summer

The track "Qu'ran" was deleted from the album at the request of a Muslim group in the UK. Mr. Eno hasn't said much about this over the years, except to indicate that the excision was made out of respect for the faith of others. Obviously, that doesn't address the potential offense that some Christians might have taken regarding the appropriation of "black preacher" vocals, but then, so far as I'm aware there have never been objections to "Help Me Somebody," only enthusiastic praise over the decades.

The now-clich?d use of "black preacher" samples on dance tracks started here (well, as inspired by Steve Reich's "Come Out" and "It's Gonna Rain" from the late 1960s.)

Although it's unlikely that a legal release of "Jezebel Spirit" with the original Kathryn Kuhlman vocal will ever be released, it's very much worth hearing, if a bootleg recording happens to find you. The drama and conviction in her voice are quite spooky, in contrast to the somewhat "disco-ized" official release with the exorcist's voice, which to my mind sounds more like a humorously naughty string of double-entendres than anything intimidating.

Nah never dug Roxy. Big Fripp and Eno and TH fan though. Maybe my Allman Brothers likings pulled me from Roxy just for balance.

Been there three times. First time was to see Agnostic Front back in '94 (they were great). The other two times were over the past three years with no name bands, surrounded by tourists.

When the NY hardcore scene died sometime around the first month of the Giuliani administration, CBGBs did too (IMHO).

I've heard Patti Smith referred to as the most obnoxious bitch on feet. And nothing I've seen hence has challenged that assessment.

I had one of my female friends describe how a gal took a leak in such clubs.

It usually involved somehow managing to have three functioning hands when you normally only have two.
