COMPUTER EXPERTS: Please explain how Foley IM's can be authenticated/vetted
SELF | Oct. 3, 2006 | SELF

Can the computer expert Freepers explain how one can verify/authenticate the IM's attributed to Foley? Can it be done reliably and/or on the other side, is it possible for someone well-versed in computer technology to issue "phony" IM's, so it would appear as if Foley had sent them?

Here's another thing I find odd. See how before the time there is the 'date'? This is how it appears whether you 'save' your IM's into AOL, Yahoo, or whoever's archive. If you activate the 'time stamp' option 'real time' while you're in an actual conversation, you also get the 'date' before the time.

Notice how on this batch of 'timed' IM's from ABC there is NO 'date' before the time.

Perhaps Brian Ross chose to 'delete' the date, I don't know. What I do know is the date would have been there along with the time.

^^^^^^^^^^I wouldn't waste your time looking for a conspiracy. Foley resigned & is doing the re-hab thing. He did it.^^^^^^^^^^^^

Didn't Dan Rather say something like that?

"The documents couldn't be verified but the story is true"

Are we on the cusp of yet another "fake but accurate" moment?

Didn't Dan Rather say something like that?

Did I miss something? Did GWB resign the Presidency at the first allegation about his service in the TANG?

Foley probably resigned in the hopes that his colleagues would bury the more lurid details. Fat chance of that now...

Didn't it take the White House a few days or weeks to respond to the "Rathergate" memos? Who's to say that the Dems didn't create a bunch of phony IM's to supplement the emails that were discovered. I'd have a pretty hard time remembering which IMs I sent to someone 3 years ago, sexual or not.

brianr49 (10/1/2006 11:03:45 PM): how could i possible do that. i don't have subpoena power to subpoena AOL for their records.these were given to me as files from the accusers.
blogblogginaway 10/1/2006 11:04:00 PM: i see
> brianr49 (10/1/2006 11:04:45 PM): is there a problem

"Yep, that's why with each release of new I.M. transcripts, Foley has screamed louder and louder about his innocence, and how this was all a dim setup.....Oh, he hasn't proclaimed his innocence due to a setup? That problem's solved."

As I said earlier, if he's guilty, he should pay......BUT, if he's been set up, those who set him up should pay, dearly........remember, someday, it could be YOU or ME, if they are allowed to get away with a "set-up".

He's not proclaiming innocence, not even saying that he reserves the right to rubt the charges later, he just quit and ran to rehab, that in itself makes him look even more guilty. But too many are praying for a Dem Conspiracy(tm) rahter than face facts, he's in it up to his neck. Now go make sure Negron has a chance to win.

I just read this off A. Sullivans site posted by a reader. I'm no techie, but I thought it was interesting.

"First off, most young people today use an IM program called Trillian. The program allows you to use a single interface for all your IM contacts even though your IM friends may all use different IM programs (AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, etc.).

As a by-product of using Trillian (and most other IM programs), all conversations are stored as a log file in the Trillian history folder. I've gone in and double checked and all of my IM conversations, going back years, are saved as long log files, one for each contact in my contact list. I believe that all of the main IM programs do the same thing.

So, no, people don't actively or purposely 'save' IMs. Most tech-savvy people know that IMs are automatically saved as a by-product of using an IM program. So if anyone, at any time, has any reason to go back and track down a previous IM exchange, it's relatively easy to do.

It's scary to think, but unbeknownst to him, I'd assume that all of Mr. Foley's old IM’s are probably stored on his PC, assuming a staffer did not go in and delete them once the story broke"

Foley admits he sent e-mails. There has been no admission about the IMs. Further, it is doubtful that he would recognize what was written in an IM from 3 years past. He may remember sending bad ones, and then when presented with what has been pushed by the media, cave without actually being sure those are the ones he sent.

Here's the links from Foleygate/Altered Images

RedState reports that these news organizations knew about the Foley emails in 2005:

We have ascertained that the list of media organizations that knew of this information as early as November of 2005 include:

Washington Post
Roll Call
ABC News
St. Petersburg Times
Palm Beach Post

It's starting to look like the only ones who didn't know about the extent of the scandal were Republicans. Is this just democrat desperation?

Does anyone else smell something fishy?
http://justoneminute.typepad.com/main/2006/10/i_smell_a_rat.html

How did ABC get all of that followup information before the story broke? How long were they holding on to this information? How many democrats knew about this but, rather than protecting the Congressional pages from a suspected predator by reporting the information, sat on it until election time? What was the collaboration between the democrats and the media, this time?
http://www.rathergate.com/

We also know that there are different Congressional pages involved here. One is the page who worked in Representative Alexander's office
(http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2006/09/sixteenyearold_.html). Another page exchanged instant messages in 2003 with Foley and these messages are just now being reported (http://abcnews.go.com/images/WNT/02-02-03b.pdf).
