A woman in Orange County, Fla., was injured when she ignited a fire while smoking a cigarette as she filled her car with gas, according to Local 6 News.
Police said the woman was pumping gas at a Race Trac near the University of Central Florida when a cigarette butt sparked the fire.
Flames burned the gas pump and set her car on fire.
"The car is virtually ruined," a fire official at the scene said. "(It happened) just by doing something stupid by smoking while fueling her car."
Signs near the gas pump said "no smoking."
The woman will not be ticketed for the incident, Local 6 News reported.

Police said the woman was pumping gas at a Race Trac near the University of Central Florida when a cigarette butt sparked the fire. Let me guess, she was using the property of the gas station as an ashtray, even though there's probably one in her car in pristine condition.

How long before she sues the cigarette company for failing to warn her not to smoke when filling her car with gas!

Smoking while fueling your automobile, truck, whatever ... is a no-no going back to the earliest years of the internal combustion engine ... and people, in spite of thousands being severally burned or killed over the last 100 years still do it ... incredibly stupid.

The cigarette will not light the fuel. The match or lighter however will. Reference Mythbusters.

I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts if the whole story were known that the source of ignition was either the cigarette lighter or static electricity caused by the dumbass sliding in and out of her car to retrieve her burning cogarette.
It is very hard to light gasoline or its fumes with a lighted cigarette.

Why, oh why, don't I ever read all the way down before opening my mouth?
I have tried at least a dozen times to start a grass or brush fire using only a lighted cigarette and I can't do it.
I even soaked the leaves in gasoline and still, no go.

Maybe she was smoking but my bet is on either she ignited the gas while lighting her fag of static electricity did it. The article says the butt did it. It's been windy in Florida, so when she tossed the butt it probably blew to where the nozzle was and the fumes ignited.

The gasoline itself would be going in the tank from the nozzle unless she spilled it; the spark would have to be where the active fumes are.
A spark knocked off a butt extinguishes itself because it has no real fuel.
Notice that embers are dark red, not blue or whitish-blue.
If you want to ignite hydrocarbon fumes use a blue spark generator or an open flame.

o when she tossed the butt it probably blew to where the nozzle was and the fumes ignited......... I seriously doubt that.

The article says the pump and the car caught on fire. The common point is where the nozzle goes in the car. That's also where most of the fumes would be.

Signs near the gas pump said "no smoking." As they have for, oh, I don't know, at least 50 years?
I see idiots doing this at least once a week. If you are that addicted at least have the discipline to keep it away from flammable liquids.
To: Moonman62
That is also a good place to find static electricity.

Classic case; nozzle in the car, liquid flowing, electrons racing, woman smooths her sweater over her bust, grabs nozzle, flames erupt, woman panics, throws nozzle on ground and exits stage right.

Do you have any idea how humid it is in Florida this time of year? Plus the article certainly makes it sound like the police determined it was the cigarette butt.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if the tobacco addicts would like to leave it up to the station owner whether customers can smoke while they're pumping gas.
