Millions of anchovies a protected species in Europe have died in northern Spain after an unexplained mass beaching, officials said Friday.
The fish, all juveniles, were found stranded along large stretches of Colunga beach, 35 miles east of the port city of Gijon, a normally pristine seaside landscape in the verdant province of Asturias.
"More than three tons have been found so far, and our main untested hypothesis at the moment is that they tried to flee from predators and accidentally beached," said Luis Laria, chief coordinator of a marine protection unit working with the government.
Laria said a European Union moratorium on fishing anchovies along the northern Atlantic coast of Spain and the western coast of France has been in place for two months. Less rigorous fishing restrictions had been used for the previous two years.
These anchovies are considered susceptible to extinction and are therefore closely monitored by scientists, according to Spain's Environment Ministry

The most important thing to know about anchovies (assuming you are not in Spain, where there are all wonderful manner of preparing and serving them:
The ones in jars are usually quite good. The ones in cans (normal supermarket type) are almost inedible. Anyone who "hates anchovies" but never tried a good one (from Spain, not Africa) has an eye-opening experience ahead of them.
Of course, in Spain, one can get wonderful artesanal anchovies in cans, but that is a different world.
Also, when you get the nice salt-packed anchovies from Italy, and have skinned and gutted them (big chore), the leftover skeletons are wonderful dusted in flour and deepfried in olive oil. Crunchy salty treats!

Followed by thousands of seagulls that carpet bomb everything and scare away normal birds and attack small animals. They are aggressive in big numbers.

Its really good. A little salty, with anchovies and olives. But with a 'bite" from the capers and garlic. Its more of a "Norte Italiano" dish...

Something fishy with this story. It smells.

"Seagulls use disproportionate force..." Until they meet me. 10 miles inland in Ventura/L.A. County, a "nice bunch of seagulls" were flying aroung making noise and terrorizing local wildlife. One the size of a chicken was flying at me with it's beak open and landing gear down. I Slapped the damned thing 90 degrees in azimuth. All I wanted to do is go to my truck on a Saturday morning to get something. Washed my hands before touching any part of my body. Filthy birds.
