I briefly spoke with a hero yesterday, you know, one of those nameless young men in the uniform of the US military. I was in the line at passport control at DFW aiport, coming back from Germany, and the young man was in line behind me, returning from Iraq. He was coming home for the first time in a year, and will fortunately be home for Christmas. He will also be undergoing some more training, until being redeployed to either Iraq or Afghnistan.
He reaffirmed what many of us know, that the media picture of Iraq is wrong. And in his most elegant Texas drawl states: "What civil war? They have been killing each other for 3000 years over there. Where have all these jack*sses been?"
I am thankful for, and humbled, by the young men and women in uniform. They are passionate, skilled and enthusiastic about their mission. They are proud to be Americans and soldiers, despite the constant barrage of anti-Americanism from the liberal press here, and all the press in Europe.
People like the young man I met yesterday are destined to make this world a better place. They choose to do it in the place where they can have the most impact.
My thanks and prayers go out to all the military. God bless.
