At least my Tigers are in, but losing 2 of 3 to the Jays is not what we needed. Oh well, at least we get the Royals this weekend.

The Astros are the one time that could ruin it for the Mets, I agree.

Actually, the Mets are in trouble at the moment. They have lost 7 of thier last 8. The last 2 games by a margin of 25-3. Martinez is now looking to be out for the playoffs, Glavine has been rocked for the last month, hernandez is getting shelled every other start, and the rest of thier pitching staff is putting up numbers in the 5-6 ERA range.

The Astros definately are the team with the pitching to totally shut the Mets down, but right now Philly, SD and LA all match up very well with NY.

We could be witnessing the greatest collapse since the 87 Blue Jays. Pujols isn't going to bail them out every game.

Want to bet? What is more probable? That the Astros can close out the year with 15 straight wins, or that St. Louis can close winning 3 out of 4?

If they do Pujols is going to have to do it single-handedly like last night.

Cubs fan here too. I stopped having any real hope for them before the All Star Break.

I'm not taking joy in the Cards' struggles (if you can call it that) lately - just hoping for a miracle comeback by the Astros.

Houston is going to have a tough series this weekend. Atlanta has been playing very good baseball for the last 2 months, the offense is red hot, they have a chip on thier shoulder of wanting to finish out the season at .500, and they would love nothing better than to end the season for the team that ended thier season last year.

John Smoltz has told Bobby Cox he wants the baseball Sunday and to not even think of removing him from the game unless his arm falls off.

You are going to need those beers when you guys miss a game or two. Cards have five more games remaining and Houston only has four. Your guys have to win virtually every game from now to the end to have a chance. Once you lose a game, you basically lose the season. Bye bye

I agree, Atlanta won't be the Royals. And Atlanta probably is looking for a measure of revenge for the 'Stros booting them out of the playoffs the past few seasons. It won't be easy, but we'll see.

Would you rather be 1.5 games back with 4 to play or 1.5 games ahead with 4 to play? Another way to look at it: who is more likely to lose on a given night, an MLB team that is on an unbelievable winning streak that is totally uncharacteristic of their entire year or a team that has struggled uncharacteristically for a much longer time than usual? Any two MLB teams will suffice. More often than not, you go with the odds. The odds say that Houston has little chance to continue its hot streak and that St Louis should be able to right their ship.

What do you mean 3 out of 4, Cards have five games remaining. They have a rain delayed game on Monday.

They have a rain delayed game on Monday. Only if they finish a mere half-game up or down. The odds are that Atlanta wins 2 of 3 against Houston, and that St. Louis wins 2 of 3 against Milwaukee. In which case: no game on Monday for St. Louis.

I live in S.E. Missouri. My students--jr high--are all big Cardinal fans. I told them that if the Cards blow a 7-game lead with only 12 games left to play, it will be a memory they'll remember for a lifetime. On the other hand, if the Cards make the playoffs, even if they were to win the Series, the memory will fade in a few years.

I told my stepson the same thing when he forgot his wife's birthday. I explained that a forgotten birthday would be treasured and used by his wife for the rest of their lives--any present he got her would would only be remembered for a short while. He wisely took his mother's advice and rushed out and got my daughter-in-law a present.

Technically, if the Astros were to sweep the Braves, that would be 12 straight, which would tie the club record. If they then won a one-game playoff, it would be 13 since those one-game playoffs do count in the regular season stats.
